Hello, I'm really enjoying this forum after stumbling across it recently. In your experience, where is the cheapest place to purchase Gransfors axes (specifically looking for the 3/4 Scandinavian axe and possibly a hatchet)? Of course, I mean the cheapest with good service! Thanks very much!

I think that you'll find the prices pretty uniform. What's just as important is if you can find a dealer who will hand select the axe and hatchet for you. All the GB axes I've heard of have been good to great - but great beats good in terms of alignment and grain in the handle, when you're paying those prices. It's going to get expensive because you probably will want one of every model, once you've tried one.
I used my hatchet in a test together with axe, machete, baton&knife - I was amazed by the hatchet and I've used it a while.. The Scandinavian Forest axe is even better.

I'd like to see a list of online vendors myself. I've got some hawks on order with 2Hawks, but I'm interested in these axes, also.

Thanks, Brian. As a matter of fact, I stumbled across his site yesterday looking for something canoe-related, and found his axe page. I have an email in to him now to check stock. Have you ever dealt with Skywoods? Thanks again, Regan

As a matter of fact, I'm expecting a package from them in the next couple of days. :D

I sent an email and they were VERY helpful and had everything I was considering in stock. I explained what I was going to use the axe for and they recommended a few specific models based on personal experience.

Brian- a question: I received my Scandinavian Forestry Axe today, and I'm very pleased with it. The head is not at a 90 degree angle to the handle, though (if stood on the butt of the handle, the bit end appears to droop down slightly). This makes the bit not square to the handle. Do you reckon this is intentional? Anyone else have one of these? Many thanks (again), Regan

Regan,

That's funny. I received my Scandanavian Forest Axe last Wednesday. I know what you mean about the angle of the head but let me assure you that it works like a charm. I did some limbing over the weekend and the axe REALLY performed like a dream.

I hope you really enjoy your newest toy. Did you get it from Skywoods Canoe?

Drooping head??
Place the axe hoizontally so that the butt of the handle and the cutting edge both touch a flat surface. The centre of the curve of the cutting edge should be the part touching. If so it's perfect. You may wish to place a piece of thin cardboard under the edge to protect the table or whatever flat surface you are using, that won't affect the results much.

Thanks, gentlemen, for the feedback. Jimbo, the axe link was great- most of it I knew but still learned a few things! Thanks!

Brian, yes I did buy mine from Skywoods. Thanks for the tip. I wrote them asking if they had one with exceptionally good grain in the handle, they responded very promptly that they did and would hold it for me. The axe was shipped promptly via Priority mail, was packaged well, and arrived in good condition. If anyone else is considering a Gransfors, I would give Skywoods a very close look. They certainly treated me well, and appear to stock every model.

I did not have time to cut anything with my new toy (I work 12-hour shifts as a firefighter-medic and don't see my home in the daylight for days at a time), but I did get to look it over better later last night. From first glance, it looks like there is no way the head is aligned correctly, but sure enough when the bit and the butt of the handle are layed flat, the surface hits right in the center of the bit. Must be the shape of the handle that makes it look so strange.

Anyway, I'm pleased so far. Thanks for the leads, guys. I hope to be able to return the favor one day. Take care, Regan

I bet Brian's passes the test too! woodtroll, don't worry - when you get time to test the axe it will impress you.
Hopefully Lee Valley in Vancouver has some good GB axes in, as my buddy has just gone to Vancouver on business. Should be some surprise as I won't know what he's bringing back until he's gone through their stock. Hopefully a SFA and a carver's hatchet.
