For amateur home use to weld cable knives. Anyone with experience wailing on either one?

The carbon steel anvil would probably do OK, till you could get a bigger/better one.
I would stay away from the cast iron version though.

I second that. I have a harbor freight steel "Black Russian" anvil (it's black and from Russia so that's what I call it) and it works fine. It's an 80 lb. model that I don't see on their website here. Bought it from the harbor freight in Springfield, MO. Will get another, better one someday - till then it will work.

If you have a good junkyard around, go have a look. Take a hammer with you and do some tappin'. I found a nice hunk of steel that made a very nice usable anvil for 20 cents a lb.

you could check out anvilfire.com they did a review on the russian anvil, and i think another one of the lower priced models that are now produced. they can tell you a lot about them and whats needed to straighten em out

get the russian anvil stear away from the other anvils by HF

or for a good one old world

I've used that sweet little 66lber :D :D :D

Either one would be better than the sidewalk or the curb. I'm sure glad I got two real anvils, I came real close to getting the Russian anvil for doing demo's with. Nice thing about either one you don't have to worry about anyone steeling them....
