2 singles, 2 doubles, 2 splitting mauls, a hatchet and 4 hammers. All I know about them is what the pictures say - one single bit is a craftsman, the other is cracked at the back of the eye, and the rest are anonymous heads heavily rusted but not beyond saving.

Anyone know if you can replace handles on hammer heads?

I got a handle for an old ball peen from my Grandpa, it came from McCoys. I've also seen them at Lowes and most other building supplies. Hickory is good. I also have two hammer heads that are getting the same treatment.

Funny story, my Grandpa's personal roofing hammer (he was a professional roofer) had so many handles that he finally got fed up and hammered a piece of steel tube into that thing. Never had a lick of trouble since. But I cant imagine how it felt to work with. I have that hammer now, and its much treasured. :)

Love those double bits!! I have to get at least one someday. Just too nifty.

I was actually looking around on the 'Bay cause I wanted to find a double bit or two to fix up. Came across this whole lot for $49 plus shipping and just kind of bought it on impulse. Should be quite the project, getting them all shined/sharpened up and rehung. But those two will definitely be the first!

Up until now I only owned one full size axe and a couple of tomahawks. Hopefully most of these end up being usable, and I'll have a decent collection to choose from now.

Lots of character in that grouping, I look forward to seeing what you do. :)

I'm not 100% sure but those 2 heads on the upper right may be stone mason hammers, not wood splitting mauls. Nice haul.

Grease,
I have grabbed a couple of lots like that. Kind of cool cleaning them up and discovering what is in the grab bag. One of mine had a nice BSA Plumb hatchet and a variety of ball peen heads in it.

Enjoy those.

Good eye, and I agree. Pretty likely that those are quarry hammers.

I'd venture to say those 2 in the upper right corner are Hot Cut hammer's for smithin, the bottom 1 is identical to the one i use almost daily for hot cutting steel on the anvil with a cut plate

Nice lot. I like the framing hammer, (lower left). You can find handles for them at any decent hardware store. You might have to pick through a few to find the best handles. Be sure to spend the time to grind the mushrooming off the mauls or mason hammers. Pieces of steel can fly off at bullet velocities with mushroomed tools. If you grind them back past the cracks and into softer steel they will be safe.

Nice find.

Well, the package is out for delivery. Almost time to start restoring them. :D

I'll be sure to do some before/after pictures for your viewing pleasure.
