Check out the pitch on this tree

Was out messing around with the compass and ran into this tree - waterfalls of pitch. I cut out a small chunk (about the size of a walnut) of pure pitch and tried to spark it - two or three showers of sparks made it burn like a candle. Add a small piece of tin foil to catch the melted oils and I'm sure this would've burned for several mins.

Hi Maidenfan -

That is the worst dripping I have seen - was there a large wound on the tree above that was causing that?

Interesting picture - never seen anything like that before.

Hmmm, not too sure man. Its next to a nav course waypoint we use quite a bit so I'll check it out. Only one side was waterfalling like that. The other side had big, slug like lesions dripping in sections (like in the photo)

great stuff! looks like the tree had an injury and was defending itself by spurting out pitch

biggest i found was from a douglas fir that had another tree fall onto it and shatter part of the truck. The ground was over 2 feet deep in pitch runnoff.
