Check out this custom 112 I had made with Ram's Horn

I sent a 112 and some Ram Horn scales to this guy in Canada (may I say who is it?). After about 4 months, it just came back to me. He had told me it would take that time, since he is very busy. When I got the scales I didn't get to select if they were similar or not, but in retrospect (or perhaps I am just rationalizing) I kinda like the fact that they are different. One side shows the bark, which I usually prefer but the other side is almost translucent, which is an interesting effect. Anyway, Buck doesn't have ram horn as a custom option so I went with that. I am overall pleased with the knife and didn't pay an astronomical price.

what other achievable bone/horn scales would be good? I already have an elk one from Buck, a sambar stag one, and another ram's horn one by Wild Bill Cody. I can't remember the place I order the ram's horn scales from.

Edit: I've all but given up on my sterling silver idea. I can't find anyone willing to mess with it.

That's wild - congratulations. Around 15 years ago I got hold of about ten thick pieces of MOP from a place in Australia - I only needed one piece, for a wedge replacement in a ~1900 pool cue - and wish I had kept them, as they would have made some crazy knife scales or fancy handles for one of my old S&W's.

Very nice! I'll bet that baby feels good in the hand. Sure looks like it would.

I don't know how achievable they would be but every knife I've seen with Ox Horn handles looked great. Eric Albers made some knives with Wildebeest Horn handles a while back. I don't remember what they looked like on the finished knife but I remember that I really liked the idea.

I like your knife a lot. I wouldn’t mind that they don’t match I think they compliment each other nicely.

Buffalo horn is nice. These are jigged Buffalo horn. I know they made a 110 with similar scales.

I sent an email to the guy asking if he wants to do another one. He didn't like getting the scales himself, especially for horn/bone. I have to find a source, the Ox Horn idea is good. I think if I do another one, I'll forgo the filing. It looks cool but it was over half the cost.

Yes, I may go with that. Buck only has smooth buffalo horn in their custom shop but I like the jigged stuff. I have a few Case jigged buffalo horn. I just hope that they aren't killing the buffalo just for their horn. My understanding is the stuff we call buffalo horn is water buffalo from Africa. My understanding is that American buffalo horn is not as good for making knife handles. I'll have to find a good source for these horns you guys are suggesting.

I have attached my humble Case knife jigged buffalo horn collection. There are so many I don't have. But the jigged buffalo horn are among my favorites. I wish Buck would make one again. I need to win the lottery, I think.

I have seen scales made of moose antler and was good looking. A lot depends on what area of the antler the scales are taken from. Lot of options for bone, again depends on the jigging, the dye, etc. Bovine is most common, but there are others, check knife maker supply merchants.
I have a 315 that had scales of swordfish bill of course the scrim adds much to the over-all picture...

Beautiful knife. I'm kind of a sucker for Marlin Spikes, but not a sailor so I guess it's just the aesthetics of them.

Nice knife.👍
You're beginning to have quite a collection!

I've seen various things on ebay that could be used as knife scales.

A Marlin Spike knife with Swordfish Bill handles. That’s just about the coolest thing I’ve ever seen! Very nice!

There is a place in North Carolina that sells bone, antler & stag, horn, MOP and abalone. I haven't bought from them yet. Found them searching for a source for MOP. A search for the word knifehandles should bring them up. You might find some other interesting option while your at it. You never know.

O.B.

Yes, that NC place looks like it has a lot of options on which I can ruminate.

Happy Hippo I took a few minutes to look at the Case knives..I have never seen the Seahorse Wittler pattern before. I can see why you like them! I bet early humans used horn on flint knives and tools like hide scrapers.

Maybe the guy who founded Case was one of those people with a lot of Neanderthal DNA😀 and in fact, he was just extending a very, very, very old family business.. Case has hundreds of patterns in their "vault"

Very nice! I have two 112s with ram horn (one with a damascus blade), and they are my favorite 112s.

Did he do the file work as well?

Why are we not seeing pictures of them? 😀. Yes, he did the file work too. I saw him from an old YouTube video where he was showing how to replace the scales and file a 110.
