A friend of my got these two elk antlers from his sister who got them in an auction. We bartered a little and now I've got plenty of elk for knife handles. :D

Elk antler was always a favorite of mine!
You can get so many handles from a set and I made pipes with the left overs.
Nice score RB!

Nice Rack.
I use Elk Antler quite a bit and like to work with it. Heres where minwax wood hardener comes in handy. Hollow out the inside so your tang has plenty of room. Seal one end with tape and pour it full of min wax. let it soak for a while pour it out and let it dry.Make the pith firmer. Epoxy on the handle.
I do a super glue finish on the outside and I.m done.
Take Care

Thanks for the tip TJ. ;) This set is not of record book size as for as length but the girth around the main beams is quite sizeable for the hefty knives I make.

You will get bored using all of it, so send half of it to me and I´ll help you out! :p

how do you turn that into handles Scott? You use full tang design so I am currious bro ;)

Brian, I'll use the tines for hidden stick tang knives (got some ideas in mind :D ) but I use the main beam for full tang. I just cut a section of antler to length and then cut scales from that. Put the piece in the vise and cut length wise and sand flat on the grinder. It's some extra work, but IMO, elk is second to sambar as for density goes. The closer to the crown you are the denser the material.

For ripping antler down the middle, lengthwise, I hot glue it onto a board and rip it on my table saw. I cut spacer sections with the same process, using my crossfeed. You get good parallel cuts that way. Actually, the table saw cuts pretty smooth, if you take your time. D-O-N'-T stand directly behind the saw blade while the cut is being made. I haven't had any kick back, but you want to do it as safe as possible. If I had a big resaw bandsaw, it would be an easy process, too. Nice score on the antlers, Scott.
