It's what's being put on so we will have to live with it. It has taken me much to long to get this far and I aint startin over. ;)

I really do think it's gonna turn out nice. I have made it a long handle for a couple of reasons. The main one is hoping to get the balance more neutral. I was afraid with a short handled knife the blade would be too heavy defeating what a good Bowie does.
And I think the extra length is going to help with chopping by holding it towards the rear. It seems comfortable just as it is.

I mostly wanted everyone to know it was still being worked on albeit slowly. Hopefully in about 3 weeks or so, no promises, if nothing else happens this is the 4th handle I've made, I will have it all filled in. Glued up where necessary and then maybe painted..

Sorry about that. The file was too big too load, check back in a while.:(
Dayumit!!!!!

I forgot my xray glasses. Where's the picture?

Plase, please, please ( ??? ) tell me that's a rat tail tang so I can fit it's grip to my hand without grinding as much steel off as on the bird and trout!

Rusty,
This is YVSA we are talkin about. Have you heard what he thinks bout chiruwa handles? I'd apilogise if I were you.

You bet your sweet bippy it's a rat tailed tang. You *surely* didn't think *I* would make any other kind did you Bro?:)

If I had of known how I would've put the blade and handle together. Here's the blade. The tip isn't sharp yet, it will have to be glue enforced, but niether does it have the bent point it did a while back.

Hopefully I will get the correct pic up this time.

Does this mean anyone approves of the handle?;)

Remember you can make a model as well as me.;)

On my 17" monitor the handle is just about life size which will also give an indication of how big the blade is Bro, Dave and Chris have all seen the blade so know how big it is. The handle as you can see takes up almost all the rat tail tang. This isn't the easy way to make a model..

I like it! But I have to ask---will it be horn or wood. I'm assuming wood...:D

I'm assumeing wood too Rob. I don't know how heavy the horn is as all I'm familiar with is American Buffalo and cow horns.
There will probably be a steel keeper on the back to cover up the hole and to keep the laha in. The guard will definitely be steel. Brass is okay, but I want a Bowie that won't fail period!!!!!;)

Used like a knife should be. This will be heavy, but I don't think it will qualify for a prybar, may be wrong, we'll see when the kamis get their hands on it.

Well, (not to brag;) I've got a 20" monitor and the handle is BIG:D Which is GREAT by me!!!!!:D This is definitely one that is going in my collection--although I may wait till the kamis get it done to specs. Ya never know when it comes to models.... But I love the way the model looks, and I'm sure they'll get there eventually.

BTW, Yvsa, what do you think it'll weigh if done to your model's specs? Which I'm also curious about. What are they?

Good pix and good model. We'll have to wait and see what "improvements" the kamis make to the design.

I agree Bro. There's no telling what the kamis will do. I'm really anxious for this one myself....
I sure hope they don't improve on it too much.

Rob I wish I could guess the weight more closely. I'm thinking around 1 1/2 to 2 pounds and hoping for the light side, actually about 1 1/4 pounds would be nice if it's balanced as I hope. I'm shooting for a balance right at the guard or a tad front or back, say 1/4" to 1/2" so the knife will disappear in the hand.

As to specs......
OAL is right at 20 inches or thereabouts....

Blade is 13 inches long X 1 3/4 inch at the wide spot at the
guard
and a tad over 2 1/4 inch at the top of the clip to the edge....

And about 5/16 inch thick over most of its length. I'm almost afraid to put anymore distal taper in it for the model's
stability.
From the top of the clip out to the point, about 5 inches the blade tapers nicely.
I may take a little more off the back end of the blade to use an old kami trick to lighten the blade and handle
some.
The balance is what I'm most worried about. If it balances where I'm aiming for it will be fairly light at even 2 pounds I think.

What do you think brothers? Y'all have as much or more experience as me.:)

ooooooohhhhhhh! NICE:D

That would be one sweet handling knife, and at 20" OAL!! What a killer reach(pun intended). Better that you reach the killer before he reach you
;) :D

LMRRAO!!! Yea and Rusty was wanting an 18" to 20" Blade!!!!!!!
MAybe Rusty will jump on the stretched AK Bowie that Bob and N2S have up their sleeves????
That oughta make one helluva short sword!!!!!!!!
Mine dayum near fits that description.;) :p

YVSA,

I like the handle. It looks a bit like the single finger groove Randall Handle. They are very comfortable.

A couple of questions

Is the tang going to run that thin? or is it going to taper down to the rat tail at the pommel?

BTW, how is your guard held in place?

n2s

The AK Bowie I'm fussing with might turn out a bit of a surprize...

Thanks N2S. I just copied the handle off my old Western style Case Bowie and then used some artistic license.

Good question. No the tang starts out about 1 1/8" and a full 5/16" thick. It should be ample, but that's an area I imagine the kamis will work out. They have the experience to know what it will need to hold up I believe.

Hadn't thought about holding the guard on. I was gonna discuss that with Uncle Bill when he got the model. I would like to see it soldered or brazed on, but the guard's wide enough to pin if needed.
And definitely a steel guard. Brass is okay in it's place, but as I said before, "I don't want the guard to fail."

Suggestions?

LIttle Bro, What are you doing now may I ask?!!!?!?!?!? What did that Bowie ever do to you anyway?!?!?!?;)

Wow Bro,

Definately soldered or brazed on - that will help keep moisture away from the tang. I like the way the handle swells back of the guard. This looks to be a classic all-around historically accurate bowie, and a major temtation!
