I was forging a Hawk order today and decided to forge out a couple while I was at it.I started this one about 4-5 years ago and never finished it as I didn't know what I was doing back then and plus I couldn't get the Sawblade to weld in the split of the mild steel body on this one.I just found it again the other day,so today I decided to go ahead and forge it out.It is small but has the cutting edge heat treated and I tried it out with a piece of Broom Handle for a temporary handle and it made short work of a 2 inch branch and I also tried trowing it at a target,no damage what so ever so I gave it a ruff finish, now to handle and age it...Is it to small to really use or did they use to carry small ones like these (I thought I had heard they did somewhere)I gave it a hammer head back side for driving shelter stakes or opening nuts or just to use.It isn't hard though so I wouldn't want to make it ruff duty work on it.
I think it looks cool,What do you guys think?

 bruce, i like it. i saw a site awhile ago were the maker had hawks about that size in a neck carry rig. sort of mountain man looking. go for it and make some neck hawks.

That would be cool in a neck pouch, without the handle.
Bruce, that is one deep trick bag you've got there. You keep comin' up with different stuff

Bruce that rocks. It looks about the size of a fokos, a sort of mini hawk head on a walking stick carried by tradesmen in Europe in the last century. Saw an article on fokos somewhere recently, looks like you made one! Very cool Bruce, thanks for sharing. I wanna hold it too!

Dave is right on track with the "fokos" idea, it would be perfect.
The article was by Joseph Szilaski in Knives 2002. Here's a scan from the article:

After I finished playing with the little hawk head,I remembered the article also about the canes and it does fit the hand nicely that way.
Does anybody know if the canes like this are legal to use in public,we know sword canes are illegal so wouldn't one of these get someone into trouble also?
Thanks for the comments everybody...Tis was fun to make.Maybe when I get caught up on a couple of orders I will make a few more small heads like this and make a cane and a neck carry pouch...
I wonder if I could get away with one of these in my Journeyman judging:p Bet they wouldn't like that since it isn't a knife..Don't think I will try.

Bruce, those small hawks are called mouse hawks, you
can by pre made handles fron Rade Hawkins. I have
some from him made from in hikeroy ready to fit and
and finish. Rade has them listed on CKD. That is
a neat little hawk, been trying to forge then and
there is a definitely a learning curve. I will have
some folkos on the market soon. Gib

i have not done this but it looks like a small to med, ball peen hammer would be the place to start to forge one of these. also bruce after two spine operations i may be ordering one of these walking sticks in the future. :D

They are neat Bruce. Legal is a tough one. It depends where. In Virginia they would be legal just as the neck hawks are. Virginia law in part says: dirk, dagger, bowie knife, switchblade...etc. (concealed)
Now the powers that be think everything they don't like is a "dirk". The courts have backed them up until recently but now they have drawn the line on many types of knives. Nowhere does it prohibit hawks or hatchets. Even the fool cops here know the difference between a hawk and a "Dirk"

As to the cane head, if something that is prohibited from being carried concealed, is hidden by looking like something else it is illegal. The hawk however is not prohibited from being carried any way you like. I suspect many other states are the same.

Very cool hawk head Bruce! These things are addictive. I forged a one piece spike hawk out of 5160 for one of my customers recently and have since forged three more refining them each time to get better performance. It seems that everytime I have a break I find myself playing with the hawk heads. The Fokos idea is very interesting also!

Thanks everybody..
I have also been doing most of mine lately from round rod 5160.The more I do the easier they become to forge and the more little tricks I learn on how to make them. They are a cool break from knives when you need to clear your head..
