Hand Axe by Bill Buxton

Oh, I dont have this, I just found the pict and thought I would share it with everyone in here.

Well I think it's going to be difficult to aim, funny to hold and you can't choke up on the bit. When using, it's going to slip out of the hand and the vibration from stricking anything hard is going to be painful.

I hope to be proven wrong.

I'd agree with singteck, it looks clumsy to use. Now, if the inside of the "neck" is sharp for use as a brush hook or sickle, it might make an interesting variant on a brush-clearing tool...

I know a lot of Mall Ninjas would like it, tho!

Hey fellers, Its not clumsy at all, very light and absolutely no vibration when using. I made this light axe for my own personal back packing use. I wanted something that was light, tough, hold an edge well and not be a worry about handle breakage. Also the curve of the handle was added so the piece could be used as a hook and drag tool. When camping I can easily drag big limbs back to camp with out any hand strain, while the other hand might be full. I agree its not the prettiest light axe ever made but it does exactly what it was intended for, and thats all I care about.

Thanks,

Bill

Hi Bill,

Sorry if I offended you. Just putting to words what comes to mind when I see it.

I wasn't offended in the least, we all have our own ideas of what we do and don't like. I was just pointing out why I made it and how it handles when being used. :)

Thanks,

Bill

Mackenzie, not at this time. I have several knife orders I need to make plus I need to take/make time after the first of the year to work on my 5 JS judging knives. Possibly late spring or summer, but I can't say when at this time.

Thanks,

Bill

Bill : Trust me! It's ugly...ugly....BUT I love it. Allmost has sort of Celtic look about it. I bet is quick and smooth and easy to carry? Impressive work.

From a mechanics point of view it should handle almost like an ordinary axe. The centerline of the handle intersects the head almost at the point an ordinary handle would. The extra curve does not affect the forces or moments felt but only add some (propably very little) bending of the handle.

Is that an original idea? I have never seen one like it before. It gives some interesting possibilities.... I like it!

hahahahaha, Dwight I believe you and I agree, it is a bit strange lookin.

TLM, yes its an original design as far as I know, I've never seen anything else like it. But most knives and axes depend on a more glamorous look to entice customers, so after looking at this why would anyone else want to make one. LOL I always did prefer to make more unique items, if possible.:D

I kind of like it too, and I can really appreciate you making it to suit your particular needs.
I think it looks like a king cobra ready to strike.
