Ebay item # 230104291090
Yall got to check this out since I rarely see one in this condition. Makes me wished I would have sniped higher than $207.00.

It was a mint midnight tiger with original box. Very hard to find. I am glad I only gave $90.00 for my last midnight tiger.

You're "Bidder 4", yes?

A 5 second snipe is credible!

Somebody's using software. ;)

I too was outbidded

Vaako you might wanna check out ebay item #:130092231604
Might be of interest to you!

Nice you thought of me, Bigocean! :)

I've been watching the ongoing saga of that customized Pentagon for some time now. It was originally part of a pair someone was selling, the other being a totally mint super-rare genuine presentation Pentagon (smooth black ebony micarta handle, brass bolster, and a luscious brown SOG leather sheath)

The buyer decided to keep the presentation Pentagon and is selling that one. There's no question the craftsmanship is top of the line, the handle is just weird, though. I'd like to "ping" the auction for a couple bids, just to see how serious the buyers are, but that's technically a form of shill bidding. There's no way I'd take the chance. eBay bans people instantly if they catch you goofing around like that.

Older Pentagon prices have been inching up. The final price of this one is going to be interesting:

120099941149

That's a nice piece. If the pictures were sharper, the price would be much higher. Still, it's clear the knife is completely mint and the sheath is just incredible. Better than any I've seen in ages. I'm seriously tempted to go after it just for that. Just look at the shine off that leather. That's not even a sharp photo and the quality still shines through. This is why I'm always going on about why I don't like the Kydex sheaths. SOG offered some fantastic leather sheaths. You'd have to pay $75-100 minimum to have a good sheathmaker make the same style today (based on Tree Stump Leatherworks' prices).

I'm glad I laid in a bunch way back when. SOG's current Pentagons are just as good as the old ones. The finish on the current blades is just a touch less polished, I think, but you need to have an old one right next to it to be able to tell the difference.

Now if I'd been clever, I would have snapped up a bunch of the old Tigersharks! :o

Can a five second snipe be done without software ? :D

Robbie Roberson ;)

Seriously? Yes it can. Consistently. :)

Hey guys, just a friendly reminder that we are skating close to BF policy on the Bay... not there yet, but listing active auctions with suggestions to bid is pushing it. I know you guys wouldn't shill, so I'm not too concerned :)
BTW, I am not sure that the maple pentagon was an original. I know GOG did some, (I had a Ltd Ed Government) but they were usually numbered if memory serves...

Good point.

I've already gotten an infraction for "auction spotting" because I linked an auction while helping another SOG regular who was looking for an item. If a moderator can provide a clear explanation how to refer to a specific eBay item without it being considered "spotting", I'd appreciate it.

For the record, I'm not encouraging anyone to bid on any eBay items. In fact, I want everyone here not to bid on eBay so I can buy stuff at super low prices without any competition. :p

There's no way that maple handled Pentagon is a SOG product (at least I hope not). The craftsmanship is very good, but the handle design is just too uncomfortable looking.

All this talk about Tigersharks has given me an idea.

Imagine the following: A Tigershark with an appropriately sized S1 bowie handle!

Vaako,
Actually I am a moderator on this forum...
I went an checked, and got the reply that as long as you aren't linking to an auction where you are the seller, or encouraging people to bid on an item (i.e. shilling), or linking when you are listing a knife for sale, you're OK. If it is to stimulate discussion (as I believe these were/are) we are OK. That's my interpretation, and I think is reasonable.

I personally would love a stacked leather handled carbon steel Tigershark!
Closest I've seen is a laminated VG10 Fallkniven Thor...
That's nice too (and pricey!)! Here's a pic... I wish SOG would do one...

my pal in Portland has a Thor ..... scored it NIB a couple of years ago for a mere $200.

I don't know if I'd care for a Tigershark with leather handle. My experience of chopping big tree limbs with the Tigershark and getting no hand shock or discomfort..... seems to me a leather handle would be too stiff and transmit all that shock.

Cheers,

Carl

Good point, I just like the traditional look/feel of the leather handle. How is my ... errr .... YOUR :o Tigershark handle? Is it the harder or softer kraton? How is that for shock insulation?

your Tigershark handle is the harder Kraton, and there is no hand shock at all, it is just like using an axe. Really amazing, but it's true.

Cheers,

Carl

Well, I'll be! You are! I'd confused the red title with one of the higher premium memberships. :o * horribly, horribly embarrassed*

Thanks for clarifying auction spotting. Definitely a thread I'm going to bookmark for future forum reference!

Back on topic, I think a stacked leather handle would look good and still feel good during heavy use. I have a vintage Estwing hatchet with a stacked leather handle that's seen a lot of chopping even before I started with it. The leather, while "hard" seems to dampen the shock better than wood.

Don't worry about it... LOL!
I actually asked in the moderators forum before posting to make sure I was on track...:o

I have the same hatchet, my father-in-law was with me at a flea market and the hardware guy had a couple NOS, so he bought me one.:D

It matched these handles...
