Oh what a shame ! I decided to check on my celluloid and glad and sad I did. I found a Schrade Cut Co. salesman sample is a horrid state ! The covers are deteriorating and have rusted the spring, bolsters, and shield. The pen blade has a spot on its tang but the main has fared well...so far.

...her clock is ticking Warning...Warning Check you drawers !!

I've got one that is fine, but destroys other knives around it. It lives alone now, in its own spot, away from his friends.

Thanks for posting the reminder about the potential ticking time bomb these can be! Gev, how long had it been since you checked it before this surprise? Sorry about this misfortune, Lloyd

@ Gevonovich - Oh man. That is exactly why I keep ( and generally cut down) cells seperately.
Did you catch it in time before it ate too much Metal away my friend?

...I checked them last month about this time! I keep all my cells together but in a separate location from my other knives. I only have 6 cells. The other's were undamaged as the location is somewhat ventilated and they are not close to one another. The blades are still in great shape and the only damage sustained to the metal is rust spots on the bolsters, shield, and pen at the tang. Who knows exactly how the liners fared.

This is why I refuse to own any celluloid knives. They're all ticking time bombs.

Given that it's a matter of when, not if, with celluloid covers why do you bother with them?

Those celluloid knives scare me, I avoid them like the plague. Thanks for the heads up, I just checked my three, two of which are tiny advertising knives I keep in a ziplock pouch all by their onesies in a drawer with a couple old zippo's. The other is a sodbuster which I only assume is a celluloid, that knife is taking a walk out the the barn where it will live out its days cutting odd things that need to be cut.

That's such a shame Gev. I had the Brownie knife and it was in spectacular condition as most were, (Girlscouts and Brownies generally got their badge/patch for the knife and then put the knife away) I didn't check on it for 2 months and when I did it had gone nuclear and the outgassing destroyed the blades and back spring. The pitting and rust were so bad it looked like someone had dug it up after bein' buried for 1000 years, OK more like 873 years. ;)

I have some attractive Cell knives, some I have owned for a decade or two. (fingers crossed and kissed the horseshoe!!), But you have inspired me to look at them more often, Gev!

Wow Gev! That cell looks suspiciously familiar to the cell on this Schrade, which also gassed out.

I got to mine before any additional damage was done, and re-covered it into a nice piece.

If you want me to look at that one, I'd be happy to check her out.

What a gasser! A great pity as some of the Old School Cell really is beautiful, but it has an unstable reputation and is the knife equivalent of a civil nuclear power station catastrophe....

It kind of reminds me of posts and discussions years back about Horn handles and the fear of invasion by horn boring beetles..

I avoid cell covers for this very reason! I have ended up with a few over the years, but have replaced the covers with something nice and stable.
