Checked baggage?

Hi everybody,
this is a question for all those in Australia or those who have travelled here and happen to know the laws. Well i was thinking since knife carry is strictly limited (to my knowledge), can i pack a knife in my checked baggage for air travel? It would not be international, just in aus. Are there any regulations on the knives to be packed? Because, since knives are generally frowned upon, would i be allowed to take them in my checked baggage?

Thanks, Jordan.

Legally you're ok to pack a knife, but there have been lots of stories of people having some very expensive knives stolen by the luggage handlers. Your best bet is to either mail it to your destination ahead of time, or use a ziptie to tie your knife to the frame of your suitcase and take photos and have lots of documentation in case it does get stolen, so you can charge the airline.

Ok thanks for the info, yeah i have read all those threads with the tips on how to protect them and i think the ziptie idea is really good.

I routinely carry a 4" folding knife (Cold Steel "Voyager") in my checked bag. I hide the knife inside a battered old pair of running shoes and stuff a pair of gym socks inside the shoes to conceal the knife. I have done this for a good number of years now and have never had a knife stolen. No thief is going to waste his or her time searching someone's shoes. They open bags to steal IPods, digital cameras, etc.

I always travel with an old Spyderco Delica in my checked bag. I put it in my shaving kit, and rubber-band it to my big Braun electric shaver. Its never been stolen, or caused any problems with security. My personal theory is that the big rechargeable battery inside the shaver hides the outline of the blade when passing thru an X-ray scanner.
