Checkered Sebenza Handle. Pics!

After polishing the handle of my full size daily carry Sebenza to a nice satin finish I noticed that the scales lost some of their original grip. Especially with slightly wet/sweaty hands I always worried that the knife might slip, which fortunately never happened. So after I read the positive comments on the service of CheckerMarx, I thought it might be a nice idea to give it a try and get the left handle scale checkered. Since I hadn’t seen any of this work done besides on pictures, I didn’t want the holes touched as not to affect their fit. So I took a marker and a ruler and just drew some lines in the middle of the handle, avoiding the ends altogether. I send the so marked scale to CheckerMarx with the instruction to put a 16lpi (lines per inch) flat top checkering on it. Two weeks later here the result (that clip on the blade is there to angle the handle a bit. My scanner has problems with reflecting surfaces). I couldn’t have transferred my drawings better.

I must say I’m extremely happy with the knife now. The checkered area gives perfect retention for the thumb when pulling the Benza out of the pocket and keeps is also very secure in my hand while using it.

In summary, friendly professional service and quick turnaround with an excellent result. Highly recommended!

the checkering looks great and i have often thought of having something like that done to a seb or two by crk but having it re-kalguarded after the checkering done....i just dont care for satin type finishes....now the question i have is going to probably get me flamed---->does deorative work like this done by a company other than crk void the warranty by crk?.....anne?....thanks....feverdoc

That looks great, Ralf. I've had a few pieces done my Julie & I couldn't agree more -- super service & excellent results.

Pontiaker did a edge rounding job for me last year on a sebenza. It's my understanding that any sort of modification along these lines, including checkering, will void the warranty.
I considered that before proceeding.

CRK's number is easy to find, if you have questions about it, call them.

That being said, I like the checkering, what's that thing on the thumb post, some sort of california Ti slug?

Hi, It looks great and is totally functional in nature. I have two sebenzas that are my daily users. I would consider doing this to the large plain. The collector in me says leave it original and don't mess with anything. Well I use these knives, but I also am a collector, so the better ones don't get used or used as much as the plain models. One can never have enough Sebenzas Ha! The high dollar ones seem to hold their value. They stay flat on value the first 4 yrs and then climb back or past the purchase price later on. I consider them money well spent. JC

Reg. cost:
It was a reasonable $32.- plus insured shipping back to your place. A great deal if you consider the added functionality and the "one of a kind" knife you'll have.

Reg. voiding warranty:
Well, as we all saw, the warranty "just" covers original manufacturing flaws
wink.gif
. Since I consider my knife free of those flaws, I'm aware that all the future maintenance/repairs would have to be paid for anyway. Besides that, there is no wear on the left scale whatsoever. I don't think I'm ever going to replace it. And if I were really mean, I could just swab it with another scale and nobody would every suspect the knife was modified

.

Reg. satin finish:
I found that a nice satin finish is MUCH more resistant to scratches or other kind of markings which can occur during daily carrying than the original bead blast. In addition it's VERY easy to just touch the scales up with the aforementioned Sandflex. I can get this Benza up to luster in a couple of minutes. And I wear it clipped to my right pocket where I keep a big bunch of keys incl. mini tool which come in constant contact with the scales.

Wow! Looks alot better than I would have thought without the photos.

If I could only live without the `benza for a while, I might consider getting it done.

An excellent job on both your parts. Looks cool and should be very functional all at the same time.

I am assuming that you didn't have anything done to the clip side?
