Checkering a knife handle

Urgh.... In other words, I will NEVER be doing anymore checkering. What a painstaking process. Especially for something that can be so easily ruined when traveling through the brush while hunting. Ask me how I know. :/

Checkering IS a very tasteful embellishment though. It’s super easy to screw up though. Just getting a couple lines crooked and it throws off the entire appearance. It’s also very easy to go past the boarder when push cutting. Which is why the “hook and pull” method is the way to go.

Great videos though. Thanks.

I'm with you. I have done it ti pistols and rifles but not knives but I have learned that their are guys that are so good at it that it be foolish to do it yourself for the small amount of money they charge versus the effort. Larry

I am doing bolster work on my emersons and the handle scale would look so cool bolstered

Now do I get a 60 or 90 cutter and which type the saw or file type ?

I'm gonna have to disagree with you Bill. It is something you just buy the tools and do.
It just looks like crap.
Then you send the stock out to have someone fix your mistakes, and do the job you wish you could do!

I deleted the pic to make room for other pics, but i did something like checkering once. I took a brass rod and filed it into a chisel, with the ends coming to a sharp point. Kind of a stretched out, thin hexagon. I drew out the lines in a square grid diagonally across the handle and started tapping away. It provided a nice texturing, but it isn't checkering.

you do it slowly with lots of patience
