I have to order something from McMaster Carr and tried to find checkering files on there site. I didnt see any....anyone ever found them there?

Hey Brian

your best bet is to go to MSC and order the checkering file, I think they have 18 lpi 24 Lpi and maybe a few other sizes

Brian, no, equaling files are normal straight flat files with teeth on all four sides I think. I looked in the catalog and online at MSC and couldn't find checkering files. The closest I found were called "Bodifiles" but they were for body work and looked much different than what you want.

The files from Brownells are top shelf aand outrageously priced. Hold onto your shorts! That's what I've always bought, but they were $29 then.

If you haven't used one before, I'd suggest don't bear down too hard. Teeth break.

Edited to add: Sheffield has Grobets in 20, 30, 40 tpi for $25.50. Page 40 in their online catalog.

Brian, my friend---I have a set of six inch by half inch Grobet checkering files since I went to saddle makers school in 1947. They were furnished to me by Uncle Sam under the GI Bill. Even then they were over $20.00 each. Used lightly and with short strokes they last a long time. They are also known as parallel or parallel line files. I believe you might find a number of places to buy them if you go to Search. Brownell has always carried them for the gunsmith in several sizes. My set consists of six files and I treasure them. I make most of my saddle stamps with them. --- Sandy---

Sandy...I remember you showing me those files! :) Guess if you take care of your tools.....the price of buying them is sort of a trade off :)

Pardon me for butting in, but I bought my checkering file at Thunderbird Jewelry Supply in Albuquerque at a MUCH better price than Brownell's. They have a website, but I don't remember the URL.
Rio Grande jewelry supply carries them also, but the price is slightly higher. They have a website, too.
Hope this helps.
Rick W.
