I am considering having the grips on my Spyderco Wegner checkered to improve looks and grip, not necessarily in that order. Would this work? How would it look? Can you recommend anyone to do the checkering or a certain checkering style? I assume you don't want to go very deep and you would want the checkers to be flat and not pointy on top.

Dennis, G-10 checkers very nicely & I see no reason why the Wegner wouldn't be a good checkering candidate. Here is an album with pictures of the work I have had done.

Your choices of pattern include how many lines per inch as well as how pointy or flat you want the pattern to be. It doesn't have to be entirely one way or the other. IMO, you want to strike a balance between retention characteristics and comfort in the hand -- i.e., fewer lines-per-inch and a flat top pattern will be more comfortable but offer somewhat less of a grip. I'm sure Nakano will be along shortly to offer his views as well.

I suggest that you contact Julie at CheckerMarx (360-380-1903 or CheckerMarx@compuserve.com), tell her you heard about her here, and ask her to send you a sample with different patterns. Good luck with your decisions & be sure to let us see how it turns out.

I' ve had quite a few of my blades done by Checkermarx. And they are a huge improvement from smooth surface scales.
