Checkering on Endura 2 and on other similar models?

Hi Sal. On the General Discussion Forums in my "Checkering Services- Thanks Julie Marx and Beau Springer!" thread, a member asked if checkering could be done on the scales of the Endura 2. Are the scales thick enough or even solid thru and thru for for this type of work? Or on any of the other models with similar steel scales? Thanks.

Nakano - Any of the stainless models should be able to handle checering up to lmm deep. I would stay away from the pins and lanyard holes. If you do any, send a pic to us at Spyderco. We like to know who is doing what for recommendation when someone is looking for an aftermarket Spyderco thing.

Thanks for the good news Sal. Will do.

I asked about the checkering. I have an engraved Pegasus that I bought at the Blade Show last year. So I know it can be engraved, but wasn't sure about checkering.

Hi Blades. Thanks for coming in. Please let me know how it works out for you should you decide to make contact with CHECKERMARX. And be sure to let them know of your source! Thanks.

The pic didn't come out great, but the checkering sure did.

Here's the SS Native I just got back from Julie of Checkermarx.

FYI, these are flat topped diamonds @16 lpi.

Checkermarx can be reached at (360) 380-1903 or via e-mail at CHECKERMARX@compuserve.com.

Nakano, thanks for giving me the idea and Julie, thanks again for the great work. Sal, feel free to grab the pic if you like.

Greetings Brian. Thanks for posting. I was wondering who that lucky person was who Julie mentioned about doing work on their Spyderco.

Julie worked on one of my fixed blade micarta scales with the same 16 lpi flat diamond pattern and I am very happy with how it feels during use. How does your checkered metal scales feel? Please provide us with some evaluation of how it works for you. Thanks.

I'm glad to oblige with an evaluation, Nakano. First, the basic reason I wanted it done was to improve grip while opening the knife. To explain -- most times I love a pocket clip; however, there are other times when I find it is simply not appropriate to use one.

I love the stainless Native for a number of reasons, including the way it fits my pocket when closed and my hand when open. The problem was, without the clip, my fingers would occasionally slip from the chamfered edge of the handle when opening it.

Although we checkered only a relatively small portion of the handle -- to avoid pins, as Sal had suggested -- I am happy to report that this is no longer the case. I even deliberately wet both the knife and my hands with water and still experienced no problem gripping it.

The flat topped diamonds have a very comfortable feel and are not rough on either hands or clothing. As an added bonus I now have a very unique Spydie in my collection.

Just a further note: While the flat topped diamond pattern @16 lpi provides good protection against perpendicular slippage (i.e., across the handle), they don't prevent back-to-front movement along the handle as much. Because of the Native's handle design, this is not a problem. However, anyone thinking about checkering to aid in stopping hand slippage toward the blade might be better off considering a more aggressive pattern.
