Do any of you guys use the checkering tools commonly used on gun stocks for embellishing your knives? If you have pictures or examples, it would be appreciated. Thanks,Lin
I haven't used them, but most people who do that nice 20 lpi tractioning for the thumb on the spine of the blade use checkering files for it. Check out some of Sal Manaro's work on TAD, too, and you may get some nice use of checkering files.
I use alot of Pakkawood and Dymondwood and I really want to checker them they are so slippery. I hope this thread kinda gets soemthing along those lines going.
Here's somemore tools: http://www.fandfwoodcarving.com/checkering_tools.htm Larry Harley is about the only bladesmith I can remember seeing that has done checkering on knife handles that really turned out nice. It shouldn't be to hard to contact him for advise.
I have the Camp Perry set made by Gunline Tools out in California. It's a good set and has replaceable heads. The company has been in business since the 1940's. Checkering is a hobby that is close to my heart. It is as relaxing as it gets. Have fun!
