... after a bit of a sabatical from the knife scene. I had become a little burnt after about 4-5 years of collecting and my buying habits were little compulsive towards the end of last year. So I took a break. No harm done and it gave me a chance to really use some of my knives a bit and really appreciate them. Just recently, my finances improved and I decided to start picking up a few pieces here and there. Some may remember that I had a "stash" store up the road with a well stocked Schrade display from the late 90's or thereabouts and I was filling in my collection from it. I hadn't been in for a while and the store had closed for a couple of months, I thought that the owner had gone out of buisness as he had been talking about doing that. Come to find out the owner, a diabetic, had had to have his leg removed after infection had set in and had been recovering. He's a rough old cob, but a decent enough guy, and I always got along with him pretty good. I offered him my regrets about his leg, but he seemed to be taking it in a matter of fact way, as rough old cobs tend to do. Anyways, he is going out of buisness in a few weeks, auctioning the place off, Schrade display and all. So while I was there I looked over the display again and decided to pick up the last 285UH Pro Trapper he had in stock, I knife that had been on my next to buy list before my time out. As we know here, its a very nice knife and a great example Schrade's craftsmanship. Very happy with it and I'll be carrying it next week.
In the same vein of gathering up old knives while you can, I'm carrying a Camillus made Buck 319 Rancher stockman with a punch that I got last week. From what I'm told on the Buck forum it was made between 90-92. Its another great working knife made by another great US knife company that is having serious problems.(Cam, not Buck) I guess where I'm going with this is that there are still good, sometimes great, old knives sitting in stores, NIB, waiting to be found by guys like us who will give them a pocket sit in and use them as they were intended to be used. Keep looking and you will find some, the hunt is half the fun.
I'll be hanging around a little more these days, but if I start to seem "compulsive", give me another time out. Glad to be back.
