I just purchased tha 889 SBMF, It looks & feels like a tank, the mfg date is 1/17/07 . The only complaint that I have is the handle scales are like cheese graders on your knuckles when you put your hand into your pocket
Is there anything that you can do for this ?

Yes...You can use a spell checker... :)

(It's cheese grater, not cheese grader) :D

This coming from a guy that spells "tracks" as "trax" ;)

Yep, it's a cheese grater and annoying as sheet. Some of the peeps here have taken a sander to 'em.

Now, if I was grading cheese, I would put bleu cheese at the top for cooking/salads. And sharp cheddar or swiss for munching.

I think you could use G10 scales to grade a large mound of Cheddar and Jack to avoid cheese slides. Do it for the children. Safety first!

Cheddar is good for snacking. Not for grading - here's a grader now =

How's that Buck 110 with the crooked emblem??? Still looking good??? :)

Speaking of spell checkers...I use SpellBound for spell checking Forum posts. SpellBound is compatible with Mozilla, FireFox, and SeaMonkey...Here's the sales pitch (don't worry - it's free)...

"What is SpellBound?

SpellBound is a port of the spellchecker code and user interface
from the Mozilla Suite's Composer that enables spell checking
in web forms such as html textarea / input elements (html input
password elements are not checked by SpellBound) and rich
text form elements. This allows you to spell check forms (e.g.
message board posts, blog entries, wysiwyg, etc.) before
submitting them when using your Mozilla Firefox or Mozilla Suite
browser."

You can find it at - http://spellbound.sourceforge.net/

Coaldigger - The 889 is considered a "tactical" knife , so the texture is meant to improve your grip in wet or muddy conditions. However , it can be a bit rough on the hands and pants pockets!

To answer your question, yes there is something that can be done about it. Myself and a few other Buck employees have have shared your opinion. I have taken one out to the shop and gently run the handle scales across a Scotchbrite wheel to round off the tops of the diamonds.

You probably don't have one of these, so I might recommend something like 220 or 400 grit sandpaper on a sanding block. I haven't tried this myself, but it should be the same principle.

I'll give it a try on Monday - Jim

After putting up with the scales for about a week, and you aren't kidding you could file steel with those things, i whooped out the trusty jitterbug sander and some medium sand paper and went to town. Worked great, of course i traded that knife off and replace it with another and will have to do the same thing again. give it a try i think you'll like it. on the down side it may void you warranty but hey it's a buck it'll be okay.

Got a replacement emblem...but haven't swapped it out. Concerned about gouging the wood trying to pry the old one out.
Thanks for asking Trax :)

Jimmer 5...
What is the possibility of Buck changing the 889SBMF to use G-10 scales from the 882SBTG?
That is what I did...and I love it.
Is it cost?
Wondering...

Ahgar - A simple modification like smoothing out the scales wouldn't void the warrantee -now if you went too far and ruined the scales..... that Idon't know, but if it was me, I'd have some sympathy!!

Goose - The G-10 scales cost a lot more than the plastic ones. If we put the g-10 on all the knives, the price would go up dramatically, and the idea of the 889 is to keep the cost down so more people can afford one. I will say, however, that you're not the only one who mixes and matches parts....... I've been known to modify, swap, hand rub, polish, etc, etc..... The 882 is a LOT of fun to customize!

I'd be careful...in fact, I think I'd drill through the old emblem (just through) and pry it off using the hole I drilled...then epoxy the new one in... :)

Or, if you're sending it out for work, just tell the mangler to replace it! :D
