chemically sharpened knives?

Has anybody experimented with chemically sharpening knives the way people chemically sharpen fish hooks?

It could be a way to remove even the smallest of burrs and produce a true razor edge, sharper than that produced by the finest grits.

I´m absolutely no expert in this subject and I never heard about this sharpening mehtod before, but maybe the chemicals could damage the steel? This would not be so apparent when using this method to sharpen cheap fish hooks, but it might become an issue in regards to expensive customs.
