What say we talk about chemicals? Specifically what do you have in your knife maintenance tool kit? I have few that I routinely use.

Tuf-Glide - I wipe it on with the cloth and sometimes by the drop from the bottle. I bought the big jug.
Rust-Free from A.G. Russell - I use it for the ones in storage only. I have had the one small bottle for years now.
BreakFree - I don't recall why I have this but I have been using it as the main lube and was wondering what you guys think about that practice. Is there a better one?
RenWax - Every handle gets a big dose. I love this stuff.
WD40 - used for hard core cleaning mostly.
Mineral oil - Stag and bone get a bath in this from time to time.
Lemon oil - A new one for me. Prompted by a recent thread.

(Gus & Blues - I know this should probably be in the Toolshed forum but I was wanting opinions from the "slippers" who hang out here. Please feel free to move it if needed. My feelings won't be hurt.:D )

I have used/use all of those including Baby Oil which penetrates well. White Lightning to loosen up a blade or coat steel for long term storage.

Mineral oil and WD-40. I do have a small bottle of Tuf-Glide but I don't know where it is and don't use it.

As I sit here cleaning my knives and surfing knife sites I have nothing but great things to say about Simichrome Polish & Ren Wax. I just recently purchased Formby's lemon Oil and tried it with great results as well...

I am still blown away by the fact that I can pickup a new knife and wipe a little simichrome on it, rub and watch with amazement the amount of tarnish, oxidation or whatever else you wanna call it come off with this stuff.

Rob, I use all that you use with the exception of Rust-Free and BreakFree.

All work well for me.

No problem leaving this in the folksy forum.
(Wouldn't think of hurtin' your feelings. ;) )

All I need is:
Acetone
PCB Etchant Solution & White Vinegar
Simichrome Polish

Lemon Oil
Tung Oil..the real stuff

Mobil One and Slick Fifty Mix
Ren Wax.

Smooth Kote
BP-2000 Powder
Hi-Slip Grease
Tuff-Glide (8 oz)
Tuff-Cloth (Regular and Marine)
White Lightning
Flitz
Rem-Oil
BreakFree CLP
Tube of Flitz
RenWax

*Note to self: Purchase Lemon Oil*

Wow! I feel folksy now!

Mineral oil.

Thats it.

I don't really have enough knives to worry about long term storage (I poke around with each of them every couple days), and I'm going out of my way to get tarnish/oxidation/patina on my carbon steel blades!

I guess I must be "old school." No good whippersnappers with your chem labs! Bah!

:D

I use rust free, mineral oil, ren wax and sometimes some kinda metal polish I got from united cutlery back before my voice changed. I don't know that it even has a name but works well for surface discoloration. oh, and white lightning dry lube on some of my knives, particularly those that are prone to collecting pocket crap.

Thanks for making me think, I usually just used my tacticools without a care for the steel. Now that I have a lot of carbon and tool steel traditionals, I have to recognize that my blades need a lil more TLC.

On my knives I pretty much stick to mineral oil, and Rust Free on occasion. I've used boiled linseed oil on wood scales, and brass polish on brass bolsters.

I've had the same tube of Simichrome since 1978, and I've had three motorcycles in that time, including a Harley with a lot of chrome -- you don't need much of that stuff! I also got a tiny little sampler tube of Flitz a few years ago, and still have most of that. Both are good, Flitz a little less smelly.

Lemon oil (from one source I've read) is just mineral oil with lemon essence added, though that likely could add some penetrating properties. Baby Oil is just scented mineral oil.

My guns are a whole 'nother story. I like checking out new cleaning stuff, and have tried a bunch. For the last few years I've settled on Ed's Red (a homebrew) for cleaning, FP-10 for lube and protection, Tetra grease where needed. Seems to work well, as I get no rust on anything, and I'm in rainy old Oregon. I have a hankerin' to try G96 and Blue Wonder products anyway.

I use boiled Linseed on on a lot of my wood handle stuff. Mainly my axe handles though. Not the quick drying stuff though. ;)

"Boiled" is the quick drying stuff :D. Try raw linseed oil if you want to learn patience. Weeks between coats, weeks to finally cure. And I'm not sure Tung Oil ever dries -- maybe it's not supposed to.

:o :o :o I know..... I meant RAW. I had the next sentence on my mind when typing out the first one. My mind can only handle so much. You're right, it always feel tacky, and has that slight fishy smell I love;)

My first "real" linseed oil attempt. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=404030&page=2

Guys, I've said it before and I'll say it again, my Miracle Cloth works GREAT on carbon steel blades, on dull bolsters, and on the brass on my Buck 55. Dirt cheap on Ebay and really simple and easy to use. Miracle Cloth - ask for it by name. :D

For lubricants these days I use Militec-1 and White Lightning. For rust protection I sometimes use Birchwood Casey Sheath.

Well, for blades/firearms, I use:

RIG grease - LONG term storage for tools & such
Breakfree "Collector" - seasonal storage (used to use Marine Tuff-cloths/tuffglide, but like this better)
FP-10 - general firearm lube
Kroil - finer parts oil
Wipe-Out - bore cleaner
Balistoil - fishing gear and knives (esp. those that contact meat/food)
Mineral oil - stag & bone handles get soaked in this 1/year
Flitz/Simichrome polish (when need to buff stuff, works well at removing carbon rings on revolver cylinders, etc.)
Mobil One grease - gun grease (M1 garand, FAL, etc.)
Pure Tung oil + carnuba wax (block) - wood handles & stocks get this, pipes get just he wax
Beeswax and/or Picards leather dressing or Montana pitch blend - for leathers

That's all I can think of now.

I've had pretty good results from Militec-1 as well, although I hate the smell. I am also rather fond of Lucas Gun Oil, and it is what I normally use on the slippies.

About all I use for slipjoint maintenance is compressed air and White Lightning. Man I never knew how boring I was until now...:o
