After reading the Sword Forum Mag. comparision of various Paul Chen models and the Kris Cutlery equivilant of the Practical Katana, I had pretty much decided on the Kris Cutlery sword. Two things keep me wondering.

First, it wasn't until after I finished that I realized the the Sword Forum article is coming up on 4 years old. I'm curious if the flaws (according to the magazine), expecially the issue with certain plastic parts, etc., have possibley been successfully addressed by the Paul Chen and company and that the current offering of the Practical Katana may be a bit improved?

Second, I now find that the two swords, which were, at the time, similarly priced has changed, substantially. The Kris Cutlery katana is now approx. $225. The Chen Prac. Katana, OTOH, can now be commonly purchased on ebay for $100 less. Since this sword is simply an initial buy to determine if my interest is sufficient to purchase a much more expensive sword (newly made or 50 years old) I'm wondering if the extra hundred dollars will be well spent.

We're talking about initial use for iaido and perhaps some amateurish cutting excercises. Even tho' I don't profess to have the skills (as yet) to properly use these blades, I do want the sword to be of "practical" use, rather than a wallhanger. Incidently, I also prefer the curvature of the Kris blade. Opinions please and please Don't be too hard on an ignorant beginner. ;-)

Answers to your questions:

1. What you read was the first generation of Practical Katana that has plastic habaki. The PK has evolved since then, now is the time of the 4th generation of PK. Improved ? Definitely.

2. I heard that KC has been experiencing som eproblems with its quality control (the same goes with Paul Chen). Is the extra hundred worth it ? I don't know. You are the person who is going to use the sword, you have to determine it yourself by handling the swords.

IMHO, I like the Practical Plus Katana. It has 27" blade and same length for the tsuka as the PK. I like this better because I can change the fitting (unlike the PK that has epoxied handle - you gotta destroy it to remove the handle) and it has the better balance compared to PK and KC.

I like good balance for an iaito.

"You are the person who is going to use the sword, you have to determine it yourself by handling the swords. "

I understand, beluga, and I appreciate the input. If I could handle the swords, I wouldn't have to ask the questions. Problem is, from a practical standpoint, one can't handle these swords before purchase, hence the questions to those who may have had a chance to handle and compare.

If that's the case, I would suggest you to get PPK. IMHO, it has the best balance compared to the other 2.

the earlier chen models just sucked, when my and a few buddies did the test, it was kind of stupid. we just wanted to see what damage the swords could take from gross abuse.
we did some cutting last week and one of the students had a pratical kat, and for the price you cant beat it. it feels more real than the kc sword. i would spend the extra money and get the practical plus. with the removable tsuka.

"Real" in what way? Can you elaborate?

i have a bugei bamboo and a custom dawson(americanized katana). when i pick up the bamboo it feels alive. the dawson feels like a battle sword, very agressive.
the kris cutlery kat just feels like a saber, nothing special. dont get me wrong i've owned a kris cutlery and used it to do iai and cutting.but something about the lack it ito(jap handle wrapping) in the tsuka just doesnt click with this paticular sword. i've felt other katanas that use different wrappings and they were fine. and the blade wasnt special either.
would i own one again........ probably, it's just not on my list wright now.
now the practical kat wasn't in the same realm as the bugei bamboo, but it is a great starter sword.

all that being said i want to get a kris cutlery nagi and make a crazy wak with it. i do like their stuff i just think that chen is doing different things right now.
and i will also say that based on expierence the kris can take a beating more. hell for the price you can get both.
