Got a few questions.

How can I go about removing the menuki from my sword or possibly switching them out?

If it is not suggested does anyone know a sword smith that is available for the job?

Thanks for the help.

Tsuka-maki (wrapping of the handle) is a art/profession in itself.

A little research will reveal who are the current top fight practictioners.

As a whole I doubt it would be cost-effective to do with a Cheness. A custom wrap (even a simple one) would likely cost a fair percentage of what you paid for the sword. Makes a lot of sense on costlier models, but not when the sword is an entry-level model.

Aye. A Cheness sword isn't worth hiring someone to change it. They are entry-level and DIY project pieces.

If you're patient, you can reuse the stock Itomaki, but you can't wrap it the same way. If you remove the Ito completely, and iron it out flat, you can re-wrap in the "Tachi Tsukagashira Kake maki" style, where the crossovers are flat as opposed to twisted. This leaves the couple inches of slack needed to finish the Ura and Omote knots at the end.

That's what I did for a Cold Steel project, and I personall prefer the style. I'm also too lazy to use Hishigami, so I wrapped the Ito TIGHT, then shellacked it. One occasionally finds antique Nihonto where the Itomaki has been soaked in laquer. Same idea, only I can't find decent laquer so I used shellac.

I just grabbed my Victorinox multi-tool and ripped them out, it actually didn't messed up the wrap much at all. Thanks for the advice everyone.
