I am thinking of purchasing a Cheness Oniyuri Katana. This will be my first sword purchase. I like the blade length of 23" with the 9260 through hardened blade. Is this a good choice for purchasing a decent quality sword a the price of $250? Buying a sword seems more difficult than buying a firearm! Oh yeah, this would be used for cutting rolled up newspaper and water bottles, but I want a blade that would stand up to much more. Any other suggestions of available swords would be appreciated. Also, would it be okay to permanently attach a handle of my own design to this blade? Correct style is not an issue with me, more interested in durability.

personally, i don't love the ultra long tsuka on those swords, but other than that, they're great. The steel is FANTASTIC, and will handle unbelievable abuse compared to less impressive steels.

on the other hand, if durability is what you're looking for, this is not the BEST bet. You should be looking at Swamp Rat, Zombie Tools, or (at a much higher price point) Busse.

Traditionally made japanese blades are strong, but not made for beating.

What about the Hanwei Banshee?

no personal experience with the banshee, but i've heard they're tough. I have owned a hanwei tactical wakizashi, and it was great. Quite capable of cutting limbs off of trees.
