Looking for a dog. I would like something that will be good with my kids, loves to play, and can serve as a watch dog.

I've been reading up on the Chessie. Does anyone have one?

There are better breeds if you are looking for "good with kids". Chessies are not for beginners.

It's hard to go wrong with the good ol' Labrador Retriever for your all around do everything dog. Just be careful with the breeding. Do NOT get one from the puppy mill store. You will keep those in my profession quite busy and happy. Spend both the time and money to do the research and get a good one.

I've been looking for a new dog too. One breed I've been considering is the Boxer. See the bold areas in the quote below. Seems to meet your requirements.

http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/boxer.htm

The Boxer is happy, high-spirited, playful, curious and energetic. Highly intelligent, eager and quick to learn, but can be stubborn and sneaky. The Boxer is a good dog for competitive obedience. Constantly on the move, bonding very closely with the family. Loyal and affectionate, Boxers are known for the way they get along so well with children. A well brought-up and properly socialized Boxer will also get along with his own kind and other household pets. However one Boxer owner reported; their Boxer is best friends with their many barn cats and second dog, but will chase and eat their ducks and other farm birds. The female boxer will often get into fights with other female dogs, trying to display her dominance. If one owns a female boxer and another female dog, they will get along and even play most of the time, however they will most likely fight from time to time. It has been said that the name Boxer came from the way the Boxer likes to use is front paws for just about everything. If you have ever watched a Boxer go about his business you may have noticed the way he paws at his toys, food bowl and you for that matter, in a very playful cat-like way. Some Boxers have been known to paw at their food or water bowl if they are empty. Playfully barking, pawing and playing with the bowl, flipping it upside-down and putting their front paws on the top of the bowl, sliding it around the house barking and whining until someone fills it for them. It looks like a silly game, but the Boxer knows what he is trying to tell you, he's hungry! While participating the sport of schutzhund, Boxers are known to jump up and use their front paws as if they are boxing. They are very clownish and playful and have been known to grab and carry ANYTHING around including your knickknacks if he thinks he can get away with it. The Boxer's nature is to protect you, your family, and your home. Known visitors will be welcomed boisterously. They are always keen to work and play. Boxers need lots of human companionship. They can be rather boisterous and even in old age are still extremely athletic. Teach the Boxer not to be boisterous and especially not to jump up at people. Boxers LOVE to jump. This breed is noted for courage and makes great guard dogs. Boxers have a wide use in military and police work. Training should start young and be firm and consistent. This breed requires a dominant owner. An excellent watchdog, the Boxer will restrain an intruder in the same way a Bulldog does.

:D One of the best dogs you could have with kids is a Bullmastiff...They are naturally protective of the family and love children...I have a female who is the easiest to get along with animal I have ever had! They are very smart, and need to be trained, quick learners...had mine house trained in 3 days...They love to play and are usually O.K.to leave alone during the day if you need to... They like to be close to you and love attention.....Chessie's are better for hunting... :D

I almost got a Chessie from a friend. I did a lot of research and talked to a lot of people. Ultimately, before I got the dog, he bit someone and I don't know if he was put down or if he was sent out of state before the Town took him.

I found that if you are looking for a heavy duty hunting dog (ducks, geese, waterfowl) that they are the strongest of the retrievers. They are not always recommended for other stuff, though. They can be agressive and difficult to handle. My son was only 5 when we were looking into this and people said that it wasn't a really good choice.

I'm not trying to talk you out of a good dog, alot depends on the dog itself as well as the situation. But if you are looking at breed choices, the Chessie may not fit the bill.

I have an 11 year old Chessie and have known quite a few more. All of the ones I have had anything to do with were from field trials breeders and were not the agressive type you hear about. They are completely serious retrievers, but all of them I have known have been as good with kids as any Lab.

They are hyper-active as puppies, but so are Labs. They are hard headed, you have to spend the time to get them to know what you want. Mine is the finest and most loyal dog I have ever met, bar none.

Dangit, I don't know why I didn't recommend this earlier...
