So, I went to my first knife show this past Sunday, the Chesapeake Knife Show just north of Baltimore, Maryland. It was great. I really enjoy going to gun shows and seeing the new models and handling pieces of history, but the knife show was so much more fun. I think I lost count how many times I circulated around the show, returning to different maker's tables to see their creations. Wow!
I made two purchases, a Baby Bullet made by Tim Britton, with engraving by Jim Small, and a 3 1/2 inch S30V Pesh-Kabz by Bud Nealy. The Britton knife is incredibly well made and sports beautiful mammoth ivory. The engraving by Jim Small is outstanding. The Nealy is just a bad-ass knife. I can't say that I will have the opportunity to carry it concealed for self-defense, which is the purpose for which it was designed, but its really cool, and that was a good enough reason for me to buy one.
I also saw some amazing knives and met some really nice people. I met Butch Harner, who often lists his knives for sale on BF. Really great knives and razors and a nice guy.
I also had the chance to meet J. Neilson, from whom I bought a knife a few months ago on BF. It was really cool to meet the guy who made my knife, although he seemed disappointed I hadn't used the knife yet. But it's so darn pretty.
I went back to PJ Tomes' table several times. His folders are just incredible examples of first-rate American craftsmanship. I also found myself at Wayne Whittaker's table quite a few times admiring his folders. They were stunning. Speaking of stunning, Stan Wilson's folders are amazing. I also really liked Gail Lunn's work. In fact, in the end, given my budget, which I blew anyway, it came down to the Baby Bullet from Britton or a folder from Lunn. I went with the knife from Tim, but I will buy one from Gail soon.
I kept picking up this one particular knife made by Tim Scholl. He said it was his first integral. It looked like he'd been making them his whole life. Great flow to the blade.
Who else? Kevin Casey's damascus was really, really nice. Kevin Lesswing also had some great looking knives.
There were many others and I just can't name them all. This is my longest post already. I am waiting for a part to my new camera and once I get it, I'll post pictures of my new knives.
Thanks for taking the time to read this. I am glad to be part of this community.
