My son came home from a friends with an interest in Chess. We played a few games and he's got the basics down, but would like to play more than I want to (He's 11, and this is NEW AND INTERESTING)

Can someone recommend a freeware chess program that would be good for a beginner? We downloaded a couple. 1st was okay, 2nd wanted to install a toolbar, (so it got quickly deleted) 3rd looks good, but there's no way to adjust the computer level, and I fear he may get frustrated.

I located several chess programs at NoNags. Link to their search page:

Lots of Chess games at FreewareHome. Can't link the search results, but using the menus on the left, explore Games -> Board -> Chess.

Couple of chess games listed here at OnlyFreeware:

All three of these freeware sites are dependable and honest - no shareware, spyware, or crapware (like toolbar downloaders).

Sorry I cannot recommend a particular program - never played chess on the computer.
