Hi there! Out for the week-end with the family again . It’s chestnut time :)! On Saturday we went for a hike, a well travelled track, rather easy 3 hours climb, leading to a clearing the kids really love because of the… horses! Also they like to have picnics on the shores of the small alpine pond, sitting on the soft grass (a kind of moss, it's a lot of Carex; C. fusca, C. stellulata, C. panicea, C. canescens, C. irrigua, C. tumidicarpa, C. pauciflora, etc.), surrounded by the beautiful larch trees (mainly Larix decidua) which are now fully getting their beautiful fall colors. The horses are not really “wild horses”, though the kids always refer to them as Spirit (the stallion of Cimarron) and his brothers :D, they are just wandering and grazing free but they belong to a rancher/farmer family. The little one marched as a soldier (even if for one hour only, then he went into the baby-carrier… on my shoulders). The whole family is very proud of him :)! Weather was fine on Saturday, a bit cloudy on Sunday but still warm! Sunday it was Chestnut Festival in one the villages in the valley here, almost every house yard had someone roasting and offering chestnuts together with vin brulè (mulled wine) :). In the morning we went for another 2 hours, very relaxed “picking hike” and we got some “treasures” back with us, good work from the kids! Last mushroom pick of the year. It will be a mushroom risotto week, I can tell you :D! Villagers are also busy, these days, with the preparation of logs for their fireplaces and stoves. It’s a lot of cutting, splitting, stacking, piling of logs and blocks. The sound of chainsaws, hatchets and axes it was the weekend soundtrack! I tried to do my part and I took with me again the well establish F1/X5 combo :p. They didn’t see much action, frankly speaking, but they always do the job with our small camp fires and minor food prep. While strolling around the shores of the pond we spotted a few crayfish (Austropotamobius pallipes). The kids wanted to roast them :D but, since they are an endangered species and fishing is prohibited, eventually I saved their lives. They were very small anyway. Some pics, just to share :)!

I really like the two horses in the creek . great pictures . Im a poor photographer but have been trying .

Fantastic pics. Roasted a handful of chestnust myself this weekend, but this is roasting on another level :)

Porcini! I found many while living in Italy.

Thanks for sharing. You brought back some fond memories of northern Italy for me, including getting chestnuts on a stretch going from Bolzano (after visiting Otzi) down to Arezzo. Northern Italy is beautiful, thanks again for sharing.

roasted chestnuts - reminds me of christmas :) thanks for the awesome pics!

Wow! As everyone before me has said. Those are some awesome pictures. It sure looks beautiful there. Thanks for taking us along on your weekend.

BTW chestnuts can easily be frozen. The nuts in the stores are best early in the season so buy them then and store in the freezer.

Roasted chestnuts are just fine, but I surely do enjoy some boiled crawfish! Or crawfish etouffee - hmmmm - good eating..... AND some GREAT photos - thanks for posting.

Mete: are you still active hamradio? Been a ham since mid '70's.

Ken, yes , AC2RC.

This morning I saw an interesting photo taken about 1900. Right here in town , the results of a drive for deer. All deer taken were hung on a large chestnut in the days we still had them. Most hunters used shotguns rather than rifles .Most also were nicely dressed including necktie !

You sir take some of the best pics and live in such a beutiful area thank you for sharing! I'm ready to move now though!

Hi. Thank-you all for the kind comments :).

@ mete: Autumn here is very much chestnuts, mushrooms, pumpkins and wine, of course! These ingredients can be found in different dishes, stuffed pasta (ravioli, cannelloni, etc.), pasta sauces, risotto, stews, braised meat, or just as side dishes and snacks (like a take-away roasted chestnuts bag), etc. Never froze chestnuts. Have to give it a try :).

@abo4ster: Ötzi still teaches me something about survival and bushcrafting :)! Nice museum, really.

Take care.
