I dont intend to take anyones advice as "law" but Id appreciate some advice.

Im a Kentucky resident with a CCW and a serious dedication to personal protection.

So, from a resident of Chicago (the city proper), can someone tell me what knives I am allowed to carry? I typically carry some variety of 3in AO from Kershaw.

Also, I noted that there is a $200 fine for possession and/or concealed handguns, but I couldnt determine if that was a felony charge or a misdemeanor...

The long and short, I take the 2nd amendment and my right for self-defense extremely seriously, and I also dont intend to do anything unlawful to be questioned, stopped, or become suspicious in the first place.

I have a business trip in a few weeks in a rather "opportunist" part of town, and I do not intend to go without some form of personal protection.

That may be for the city ordnance violation, however, IL state law (generally) makes it a felony (under the Unlawful Use of Weapons law) to carry a loaded firearm.

Do not bring any handgun into chicago. You will be arrested if caught. The only size knife you can safely carry with out fear of arrest is a small pocket knife,3in blade.

Is pepper spray or a Tazer outlawed as well?

For having a high per-capita homicide rate...all I can say is sheeple...and Polisheeptans...

Chicago city law is technically 2.5 inches, I have not seen this enforced however. I believe pepper spray is OK. Handguns are a big no-no here.......they're only for the criminals......

If you decide not to carry your handgun, walk with a sturdy walking stick or cane. Not as good as carrying a handgun, but more effective than a knife, and you won't get in trouble for it either. If you don't have time to order a good walking stick or cane, just find a shovel with a thick, sturdy handle, and cut the shovel head off. Its what I use for a walking stick when I'm walking around. A good reason for why you have it (if, for some odd reason, a cop does decide to question you about it) are that you "have a bad knee that gives out on you at times." I've never had a cop even look sideways at me while I was walking with mine, and I've been walking with one since I was around 15 or 16 (I'm 18 now). Other people do tend to look at you strange if you're not a senior citizen, but that's not a problem unless you're self-consciece. Whatever you decide to do, DON'T forget to carry a flashlight that's at least 100 lumens (most people recommend 60 lumens as a minimum, but I personally won't carry a self-defense light that's below 100 lumens, and I won't recommend something that I wouldn't use myself). A good one that won't cost you an arm, if you don't already have a light that fits the criteria, is the Surefire G3.

You can travel with a handgun properly secured in the vehicle in Chicago, but with careful restrictions.

Chicago's weapon ordinances are summarized here.

Bottom line on carrying firearms is, as everyone concurs, NO. You may have a shotgun at home, provided it can't load more than a couple of shells.

Cook County also has additional restrictions, but Chicago's are the most restrictive.

If you're very serious about your Second Amendment rights, Chicago is NOT a place for you. Look to the suburbs, particularly those outside Cook County, for considerably more relaxed restrictions! You still can't carry a weapon outside, but you can own a handgun, rifle, or shotgun for home defense purposes quite readily in most counties ringing Cook.

Dont have much choice, going for business for a week, and its a must attend event.

I'll make sure to take my Surefire, Pepper Spray, wear steel toes (more effective than just about anything in my experience, no shin, no fight), a 3in-ish AO knife...

...and hope like hell I dont end up looking at the wrong end of a gun.

Nothing like being left defenseless against criminals.

Where are you headed in Chicago? I'll let you know what you're in for.

Outside of a few well known areas, you'll be okay. The criminals *in* the business world are the ones to watch... ;)
