My nephew wanted to give me a knife as a gift for Christmas but knowing his finances weren't in the best shape, I said how about a nice adventure/crime/or horse racing book? I received the book + a commercial kitchen utility knife which I put in a kitchen drawer. Just took that knife out & really started to admire it! It's made by Chicago Cutlery; 5" blade; integral utility knife with something like bakelite handle with a slight palm swell. It fits the hand just great and has nice balance. Does anyone know what type of steel Chicago Cutlery uses and any experience with their kitchen knives?

Dunno what kind of steel they use, but all as I was growing up used chicago cutlery set my mom had(the old wood handled kind). She has gotten newer sets from cutco and similar but alwyas gone back to the chicago cutlery.

when Imoved out a coupla years ago was working at walmart, and found a set of chicago cutlery(four basic kitchen knives) for $7 on clearance. picked it up, never regretted it.

Thanks etp777! I know this utility knife couldn't have cost more than $10 but I'm impressed with it! I figured if I liked this one blade, I would replace my hodge-podge set of kitchen knives with one of their sets. But I'd still like to know what type of steel they use and if they hold up over the long haul?
