Chicago Screws- smaller type???

I would like to make some small Kydex sheaths using the 3/16 rivets- instead of the larger 1/4" which I usually use. Saying that, I now need a smaller type of Chicago Screw than the type they sell at http://www.knifekits.com and http://www.texasknife.com -since this type only fits the 1/4" rivets.

Any ideas where I can find this smaller type of Chicago screws would be highly appreciated.

Thanks and Regards,

Jorgen

Look up binding posts on google. I found some 1/8" binding posts "chicago screws"

Thank you for the tips! I have searched on binding posts- find mostly the standard 1/4" Chicago screw. But the one you found- 1/8" sounds perfect!!! Will continue to search. Can you remember the name of the company?

Thanks!

Jorgen

Accurate Manufactured Products Group, INC.
Part No. 24302-BK :D :D

Thank you blgoode!!! You are a life saver! :)
I couldn't find it in their online PDF brochure, but I will send them an e-mail.

Thanks and Regards,

I didnt see it either so I ordered from MSC. and got the package from these guys. MSC tried to double bill me for shipping!!!
$16.50 for shipping a box of 100 binding screws!!!??? I got that charge lowered :D

Hi blgoode and others,

I think we have some missunderstanding... I go a reply today from Accurate Manufactured Products Group and they say that Part No. 24302-BK is actually part# Z4302-BK in their online catalouge.

Saying that- this chicago screw has a barrel diameter of 13/64"- while the lenght is 1/8". What I am looking for is a chicago screw which has a max barrel diameter of .155", so it fits in the hole of a mounted 3/16 rivet. A min-chicago screw with other words.

Any ideas? Anyone?

Regards,

Jorgen

Humm,
Call them up. They may have something like that. Of course you dont want to have to grind them all down but you may have to.

You might try Fasteners Express and look for blind nuts in size 4-40 thread. They are not exactly a "Chicago Screw" or, "binding nut, but they will work with a little bit of modifying. There are two prongs that need to be bent/ cut off. For 100 black oxide Phillips head screws and 100 nuts it cast me around $20 after shipping. If you need smaller quantities try hobby shops, where they keep the RC airplane stuff, which is where I finally found them.

Welcome to Shop Talk! You'll like this place.

That's a good idea, I'll watch for those. Hadn't even thought of it. Keep coming up with suggestions like that, okay?!

While we're talking about sheath hardware, which has been giving me fits since I started making plastic sheaths in '99, where can I get black oxide button head torx screws in 8-32 with 1/8" long threads? Answer that and you have a friend for life!

I got mine from Fastenal SP? right down the street from my house. Look up fasters in the yellow pages. Nit sure if there is a listing for that but there is probrably someone local that has them.

Huh. There's a Fastenal here in town, too, but whenever I go in there and ask for any type of screw that's shorter than about nine feet and smaller than about 1/2" diameter they look at me like I flew in from outer space.

I checked that website out, Brian, and couldn't find Torx, button head or 1/8" length in the machine screw section. I hunt this topic online about once every week or two and I doon't know if I'll ever find what I'm looking for. :grumpy:

I just looked at about 15 different websites and not a single one carries black oxide button head torx screws at all. Halpern has SS ones in 1/4", which is still too long. This is driving me nuts (haha).

I just went in and looked around. I bet they have something that will work.
Here are what Mine look like -

And I have 1/8" posts so I know that they will work. I had to get washers so they may be a little longer than 1/8".

I'll drop in on those punks and see what they say this time. Nice sheath, by the way. Those look like Allen wrench heads, right? I could live with that. I like the look of Torx better, but at this point I could care less. What are those washers? The best thing I ever did in my sheathmaking life was discover the existence of OO rubber washers in the plumbing section at Lowe's. The inner diameter is a perfect fit for the 13/64" post on the Chicago screw and the OD is just a little larger than the "head" on the post. They're sweet. They make the shorter Chicago screw posts just the right length and when you run them between the clip and the sheath it brings the clip off the body of the sheath and kills two bird with one stone.

I wish that I could take the credit for the idea, but all of the credit goes to my girlfriend's father. One Saturday night we were sitting around the dinner table, and I was complaining about how I couldn't seem to find them anywhere, even though I knew that I had seen them. He looked at me and said (very sarcastically, as if to say you idiot) "Have you tried hobby shops with RC parts?" As an aside, I am not sure where all of you get your eyelets, but I get mine fro Ray Ennis of Entrek Knives and the flat head Phillips screws I mentioned in the last post fit perfectly flush and right inside the hole.
