I'm not too great on my fungi ID'ing but I think this is Chicken of the woods that I found today.

Can anyone confirm this from the pics and has anyone eaten it before ?

You will want the fresh, moist ones. If you find some rather dried out, leave it where you find it. It'll just be tough.

To use the same page Karl linked, which is a lot better than the one I did, they're here: http://americanmushrooms.com/edibles4.htm
Sulphur shelf, or chicken mushrooms. I haven't eaten them, but I've heard this story of one guy who ate them, and he was pleasantly surprised. He said they really tasted like chicken! It was on a blog about eating nasty, unexpected stuff, so I guess these mushrooms didn't have much contest :D

I don't think so Pitdog. For 'shrooms its best to find a mycologist and make him/her your friend to take on a walk around.

Think I should try that, too. See a lot of mushrooms in the woods here, but I have no idea what most of them are.

Im mistaken . I got Hen of the woods and chicken of the woods mixed up. Googled chicken of the woods and they are orange. Heres a H.O.W. I found.

That's a good one, did you eat it ?

Found a great Cauliflower fungus about that size once, still regret not taking it home !
