This year at BLADE, thanks in large part to this forum, I was on a hunt for knives from my childhood. Roaming by the various vendors selling slipjoints I was on the hunt for a Shrade 34OT stockman. I owned 2 as a kid & screwed both up using them in ways a knife should not be used. Friday & Saturday I had no luck, then finally on Sunday I found a pristine example. Struck a trade for the Case Seahorse Whittler I had & it was mine. As soon as I held it I was flooded with memories from my childhood - fishing trips with Poppa, Scout trips & just there in my pocket when I needed a knife. Seemed a bit smaller then I remembered, but then I'm a bit bigger now.

Thanks - Pat.

Funny how a few once's of steel and delrin can hold memories so well.

And the 34OT may be a bit smaller than you remember, but legions of working men have got a lot done with that little work horse of a pocket knife.

Halfneck, still have the 34OT I picked up in Panama back in 1987...and it's still a cutting workhorse! I agree with Carl, that "little" knife will do for most any cutting task you can find!

Very cool find.
My childhood pocketknife,a cattle knife pattern found at a local flea market, is still missing somewhere up in the hundred acre woods behind my folks house.

When my Dad passed at 83, he left me his dresser, and it's contents. In that top drawer, with the socks, handkerchiefs, and string ties, were some knives. Mine and my brother's BSA sheath knives from the 60's. Dad's Boy Scout jack-knife, from the 30's, and his AF Aircrew survival switch-blade. Oh the stories they could tell.....

If you're looking for a 34OT user, I am giving one away in my "Inspired" thread elsewhere in this forum. Anyway, I am glad you got to connect to a knife from your youth. They bring back a flood of memories, don't they?

Glenn

I had a few Old Timers over the years, stockman models. Then I could afford some nicer, more expensive knives. Just recently dug a few out of the garage and started using them again. Amazing the memories they bring back, and how appealing such a simple, reasonably priced knife can be.
