Well wee-man and I went outside to build up a little fire. We used a nice mini-pit that my dog was so kind to make for us. I didn't want to use my actual fire pit because I wanted him to be able to be hands on and get in there to see how it's done on a close scale (my actual fire pit is a big old brick on and he'd have to actually get in it to get hands on starting a fire since he's so small).

Here's Ivan scoping the pit and getting ready to split up some kindling:

Kindling is a burning, splitting up more wood with the trusty BK2:

He loves the hatchet!:

He asked me to take a picture of my knife....um how could I refuse lol:

And that folks is how I spent my morning. I told him we'd go back out later and he could wear my ghillie suit hat to hide around the back yard. I can't get my daughter to go outside with me for this type of stuff so thank goodness I have a little man to play with. I'm not giving up on her though, she'll give in! She's just too prissy like her mom.

Oh man that looks fun. The wonderful thing about this is that he'll have fond memories forever of the day you were off and spent it showing him how to make a fire.

Most of my earliest memories are of doing things with my dad. Those are the ones that really stick.

It really is fun Chalet. I certainly hope he does always remember these activities we do. He is always down to do outdoor things with me. Especially if it involves knives. He loves knives (in a healthy way of course).

Thank you for responding and viewing the thread. I appreciate it.

That's how to be a dad, 101. Good on you for getting out there with Ivan, and a pleasant reminder (to me at least) to get out!...and enjoy what's out there no matter the weather. I only have girls, hopefully I can get them out some more this year camping and hiking. Took a chance last fall and went to the Northeast Gathering with them...they had fun and I expect to be there for the ENTIRE weekend next year.
I remember going fishing with my dad when I was younger, but he wasn't all that competent with knife skills....still, I love him.

Thanks Granite! Oh man I love some camping too. That's great that you got all the ladies out for some wooded adventures. My wife just ordered her and both kids new hiking boots for the upcoming spring. Ivan got his first fishing pole on Christmas (a good ole ugly stick) so I'm sure we will be fishing it up. Blue gill beware. I can't wait for spring so I can get the whole family out and in the woods about every other weekend.

You're welcome. These types of things make me excited to have kids someday.

Good job. Any day spent outside with your kids is great day.

That's awesome man!! And your kid looks so happy. It's great to get the kids outdoors these days. I'm sure he will remember these moments for ever.
I know I still remember doing stuff like that with my dad.

That's the best way to teach someone knife safety in my opinion. My dad taught me knife safety at a very young age, and I've never seriously cut myself in all of my outdoor outings. Maybe I'm just not trying hard enough?

Anyways, cute kid. Looks like a really fun time.

Chalet,
Kids are awesome. Word of advice, get the crazy out now. When kids come around they are your life. They take all your time and resources. They are amazing and horrifying at the same time hahahaha.

tradewater,
Thank you very much.

Don W,
Thank you and Amen! I agree. I love being outside. Of course tonight we had to go outside even though it snowed and is freezing here to make another fire and cook hot dogs for the ladies. He wanted to show off for mom.

Dex,
We are a very active family. We don't do a lot of tv. Every night we play family games, do homework, exercise, and get outside to have fun. Tv is considered boring at our house.... basically something to do if we're sick. We are all super hyper and love ramming around.

Serin,
Thank you. I learned to use a knife at a very young age as well. It goes a long way if you are shown these things in critical periods of development. That being said he is also very coordinated and motor advanced (doctors have said that for years now) so I am confident in his ability to control the blade with supervision. He has also shown the interest and mental capacity to handle the seriousness of the situation.
