Chinese Buck pretty good

I don't want to restart the same old discussion about Buck's made in China.

I just want to say that I just bought a 379 with birchwood handles at Walmart for $9.99 and the quality is really good. It's not up to par with USA made, but great for $9.99. I'd even say better than Schrades in terms of materials and blade grind.

Buck won't go belly up because they are changing with the times. Buck sells Chinese knives to stay in business so that you can still buy the USA made ones.

Just my two cents.

I've got three of the China made Bucks; a 198X Mantis, a 198 Mantix and a 199 Pilot. All three of them are perfectly made, great cutters and make perfect EDCs.

Do you have the ability to post any photos of your model 379? I don't even know which model that is, slipjoint, lock blade, fixed blade?

I have trouble locating the China-produced Buck Knives (usually the ones that Wal*Mart sells...) on the Buck Knives web site. I have a couple of birchwood handled China-produced Bucks, model 728:

I can't locate those on the Buck Knives web site, either.

Those look like they would be good users. The Wal-Marts up here don't have those. They have the 119 and Diamondbacks. I purchased the larger Diamondback yesterday. Mostly to keep my little Diamondback company :D

To reply, I haven't yet figured out how to post pics, but it is under the name Buck Solo at Smoky Mountain Knifeworks (eknifeworks.com).

I got those model 728 "Whitetail Dear Collectibles" at Wal*Mart, during the 2004 Christmas season. They started at $25, leading up to Christmas, and were down to $11 by the end of January. You might want to see if Wal*Mart has any special Bucks available around Thanksgiving.

Thanks for putting me on the right direction, Mike. I did a search at Google and found it. Looking through eknifeworks.com got to be a chore, so I went through Google.

Remembering Willthebarb's collection of Buck 300s, I'd started thinking that it was probably a slipjoint model.
