Here`s one for you - got a budget Japanese Suncraft fruit knife with plastic sheath for £19 - the top one.
Bought a very similar one from China for a seventh of the price - they are both equally sharp and equally well finished.
They both have plastic handles and the blades are nearly identical.
The bottom Chinese one even has a hanging hoop.
Is the Japanese one made with better steel? probably - Is it a bit heavier? yep - but I don`t mind.
I think they`re both brilliant knives.
I`m probably a bit biased having lived in Hong Kong and Macau and having family in Guangzhou.

Both budget fruit knives are probably on the extreme lower end as far as steel goes.
THe Suncraft line is basically crap using 18-8 (304 equiv) steel.
I doubt the Chinese version is any better to be honest.
Senzo, who makes the Suncraft junk, also make several series including their pro series in SG2 power steel.
But that's another animal.

Yep I concur KenHash - but to me they`re okay.
A lot of my friends are Asian chefs with budget knives and their knife skills are so good they don`t need dear knives.
I`ve cooked for 300 just using a 5 inch stamped Tramontina from the mid seventies.
I have a caidao in RWL-34 and the edge retention is very similar to my Japanese Eden santoku in Aogami blue #2 carbon. The Eden carbon was tested in a pro kitchen for four months and it only needed honing on a leather in that time; no sharpening.
The Eden cost 40 times less.
Now I have the Tormek T-1 I can sort them both out in a jiffy.
