Chinese Damascus from EBay....Anyone Buy??

Hey all,

I check out the knives on EBay a couple times a week or so. Not long ago I noticed some nice looking damascus and non-damascus knives with a price that was pretty low so I decided to check them out. It turns out that they are from China. I looked at a lot of these knives that this particular vendor had listed and they don't look that bad at all. There were several both Damascus and non-Damascus knives that looked like they would make a decent hunting or woods bumming knife.

Since my nephew is wanting a hunting knife I am thinking about getting one of these knives just to see what it's like. Before I buy though I wanted to ask and see if anyone else has bought one of these knives from China or has ever examined one of them and can tell about their quality.

Does anyone here have any experience at all with these knives? How do you think they would compare to say a sub $50 factory knife that you would pick up in Wally World or in one of the BIG catalog stores?

Thoughts?

The country of origin may be less important than the lack of branding. I would be reluctant to buy a knife with no branding. It isn't that it might not be an O.K. knife, but from what I have seen, it is more likely junk.
 
I would not chance it. Being made in China is not a a bad thing, but without branding....If you want to get your nephew a hunting knife for less I'd recommend something from the spyderco byrd line. They are also made in China, but they use decent steel most have g-10 handles. The spyderco tenacious is also worth looking at.
 
Can't go wrong with a Byrd Cara Cara in G10.
 
I wouldn't go into it even half expecting a workable knife as the odds are against it.

But, I got a damascus blank off ebay a few years ago, that was made in india, that is surprisingly good quality, there have been some pretty horrible ones I've seen too though.

Might be best to get a decent known blade for now, and if you're still interested pick up one on ebay (mine was $12 or something with $10 shipping, came in an envelope and wrapped in palm fronds, wouldn't risk more than that)
