I just received my new Blue Lum Chinese Folder. It is a very nice and useful knive and I'm sure it will become my favorite EDC.

I'm able to determine if a knife will be the right one for every day tasks, but I'm not sure if it can be use as a defensive weapon. I don't carry knives for this purpose but I always ask me this question, just in case... What is your opinion ?

Just an another question : do you ever take apart a Chinese Folder ? Is there any problem ?

Thank in advance, have a nice day ! ;)

Use the Chin. Fold. to carve a stick and use the stick to ward off evil!

Taking anything apart is simple, as long as you have patience, an eye for detail, and if it's really complicated, a digital camera.

Bonne chance avec vos efforts et faites attention!

Fast,

what is a Blue Lum Chinese Folder like? I´ve never seen one. Is there a link around the world wide web I can see one?

Thanks in advance!

Fast, The Lum Chinese is as good for defensive purposes as any other knife of it's size with the same type lock. I like the lines of mine and have had no problems with it for the year that I have owned my Green one. I don't take my knives apart so I cannot respond to that end of your question.

To get back to the defensive side of your question, I would say nobody would choose a Ladybug as a defensive knife, but if that is all you have at the time it is better than your fingernails. No one likes to see there own blood spilled, a slash with a Lum Chinese would send me scurring the other direction.

In reality, I feel we all tend to dwell on the possibility of needing a weapon. Few seldon ever have the need, thank God for that.

Stay safe.

ANY KNIVE will make a good "defensive tool"( as long as it's well made, with a proper blade length ;)) The Lum Chinese should serve you well on ALL front(s)!

Claus : Check out www.GOOGLE.com
then enter Spyderco "Lum
Chinese" and you should get some "eye candy" (i.e pics)

Happy Thanksgiving to ALL forumite(s) & their's :)

AET ;) ( ATE on the Spyderco.com "home" forum ;))

Here's what I like about Lum's Chinese Folder as a defensive knife:

1) The edge has the slightest hint of a curve, and is ground fairly flat, so it'll slice very well.
2) The handles are ergonimically contoured for a good swing while slicing.
3) It doesn't look like a good defensive knife, so it's safe to carry.
4) The style of knife the Lum Chinese is based on, has a history of being used as a fighting knife (as well as a utility knife).

My only complaint about the Spyderco version is that they picked the wrong size. Bob Lum makes a larger version that really brings out all the positives of this design. See attached photo. The top is Spderco's Blue Handled Lum. The other three are Lum customs, with the Green-10 in S30V.

the spyderco b/l folder in my mind is one top knife, great on the eye, great in the hand.i have stripped mine down, filed purchase lines on the spine and replaced the plastic spacer with a piece of deer antler that i carved and filed myself also i have put a box knot land yard (like the one's on the strider knives) finished off with a monkey fist.this knife is now "mine".
as for defensive applications i'm not sure,i use the sharpest tool i have for thease types of situation..my mind(although it feels a bit blunt lately)
cheers

Thank for your answers ! I think it is more clear for me now...

I will get a new camera in a few time (maybe as a Christmas present :D ) so I will show you my knives.
