I have had my Lum chinese for about two months now. I have recently started to notice the black ink in the etching of my Lum is disappearing. Anyone have the same problem? Should I be concerned with this and will it get any worse?

I had the same experience. No more black at all now. After stewing about it a couple of days, I decided not to worry about it. BTW only the color (black) is gone, the etching is still clearly there - and looks quite nice)

The color's totally gone from my Lum also.

It looks better either with the black or w/o the black. But it looks a little beat in the in-between state.

Spyderco should stop putting the black ink in the etching.

It would be nice to here if this is something the company is aware of and fixing. My 4 year old benchmade certainly does not have this problem.

The etching or ink is also leaving my Stamate.

Tell us factory men, you working on this or don't you care.

Lets here from the factory, not the rep.

Should we all send it back for replacement under warranty?

Personally I think it doesn't matter enough for a warranty repair.
I've seen what JJ is mentioning about his lum's etching is loosing color, but many other items with that kind of etching and inking also looses color eventually. The problem is that if you use it, you'll loose the ink for sure, no matter what you put in there.
Other factories' etching can also be rubbed off depending on what it's rubbing on and how often. I've hand stripped the bead blasting and the etching of the CRKT logo off the F4. Although that style of etching hangs around longer, it's still can be worn down.

Thanks for the response Mr. Glesser

Calyth, Spyderco competes head to head with Benchmade. I have a 4 year old Benchmade, 3 year old and a 2 year old. All etching/ink is still intact and looks as good as the day I bought it. If Benchmade can do it, so can Spyderco. If I pay the extra dollars for a knife designed by a custom maker, I expect the maker's mark to remain intact. I have 3 customs, the marks are all as good as the day I bought them. Now, my coldsteels have the marks come off on polishing, but then their cheaper than Spyderco and not designed by a custom maker. I won't send any knife in for cosmetic repairs, but it still would be nice to have the cosmetics hold up.

Exactly. I love my Lum and would have liked it to be able to withstand all sorts of polishing without the ink from the etching to rub out.Hopefully this problem can be fixed in their future models. Thanks for replying Sal, appreciate it.
