Chinese lum vs. Mini dejavoo(745)

I personally don't like either, the lum just feels like your going to cut yourself when holding it and the BM had a sloppy lock on the ones I have seen. The BM is the nicer of the two but their just not to my liking.

there was nothing sloppy about the lock on my 745, solid as a rock, perfect fit n finish and awesome sculptured G10 handle

I too am a fan of the 745... smooth as silk, excellent slicer, and straight up dead sexy... but the lum chinese popped up on my radar so any input would be nice.

The lum is nice but because of the handle shape and lack of any kind of choil to me it feels like my hand was slipping onto the blade when just holding it. It has a nice leaf blade and I'm sure the knife performs well but the handle just kills it for me. If you like it buy one then if you decide its not for you put it on the exchange.

I prefer G10 over aluminum, S30V over VG10, handguard over, well, no handguard, so dejavoo it is...

The chinese lum has been a holy grail of many for yearS! And the newer model comes with ZDP-189 blade, that should do it for me. But the shape is just a deal breaker to me, it looks like an incapable......nvm

I have no worries over the grip of the Chinese - I have a ZDP model. I've had the choice of a Dejavoo as well, but ultimately decided against them/for the Chinese. I think the Chinese is more attractive, and prefer ZDP over S30V. I like tip-up which the Dejavoo doesn't have. I've heard the issues of lock-up on the Dejavoo, but I also hear people praise it, so I'm in the middle on that.

Just, for my tastes, the Chinese was the better knife - you have to consider what you really like in a knife.

Both are very good knives, IMHO. I admittedly had the ZDP Lum Chinese, not the VG-10 versions.

Steel wise, I like the ZDP better as it hold its edge noticably longer, but stains easier. Nothing's really wrong with S30V in comparison to ZDP-189, except the slight edge holding advantage of ZDP.

I like both knives, but admit the Lum Chinese can be/get slippery at times because of its almite coated handle (I've never handled the G-10 version). The DeJaVoo's G-10 isn't grippy, but provides more of a grip than the almite does. I think the locks are about the same, but have found the detent on the DJV to not be as strong as on the Chinese. Also, there's not finger guard on the Chinese. While that hasn't been an issue for me, it does make me uncomfortable at times for some reason. I carry/use a slip-joint (Along with a folder & FB) as EDCs & the lack of a finger guard hasn't been a problem, but it's nice to have.

I prefer the tip-up carry of the Chinese, especially because of the DJV's weaker detent. I carry right front pocket against the rightmost seam, so I'm not going to stab myself with the blade on tip-up. I have actually stabbed my finger with the DJV, because of its tip-down carry. Of course, that's just my experience & opinion.

F&F is excellent on both knives, IMHO. Of course, the best answer is get both & try them out.

i've never handled a chinese but i like the 745 a lot. the only thing is that is doesnt have very good closed blade retention. the g10 isnt very grippy either. but it locks up solid as heck. i like the blade shape and it has a decent amount of belly.

I was really drawn to the 745 for a long time but was never able to commit because it seemed to overlap too much with the typical Spydie design, plus I read a few criticisms that cooled my enthusiasm (detent, difficult access to opening hole, tip down only). Since then I have read so many rave reviews that I will probably get one eventually. I do, however, have a ZDP Chinese Lum and I absolutely love it. The shape is a little weird in the hand, and you wouldn't want to try stabbing anything for fear of your hand sliding down over the big beautiful ZDP leaf...but...just look at it, something to do with those lines just captivates me and so I carry this guy almost more than anything else. My ZDP blade has a really cool patina as well; I swear it keeps changing, although that might just be my love-struck mind hallucinating. It is really pretty.

As a side note, there is a funny review on Youtube about the 745 where the guy offers a simple and effective solution to the weak detent if you can get over the sacrilege of fixing your knife with a piece of darkened post-it note paper. Basically he just slides a folded piece of paper down between the liner lock and scale, then tears it off so it stays stuck down there. It seems to work a treat. Maybe just get wasted drunk and do it then so that in the morning you can't remember, and then you won't have to admit that you fixed your sexy $100 knife with a piece of paper.

I own 2 of the new sprint run Lum Chinese folders and do not own any Dejavoos.

I've been carrying knives for decades and I have not had any issues where lack of a guard has hindered it's use as a EDC and I will use if for any chore up to cutting up heavy boxes for the recycler. With that said, it may depend on your definition of what a EDC-type knife is expected to do v. a outdoor/sporting knife.

Either one should perform well.

i love the chinese folder so much i had this made by terry kniper.

As so often with Spydercos (not always!), their Lum feels a lot more "logical" than it looks. It's also a tremendous slicer with its relatively thin blade. Fit&finish could've been better, I took mine apart and removed some rough edges from the scales and greased it carefully - it's action is now in Sebenza-territory.

I think BM didn't get things quite right here. It looks too much of a rip-off to me.

Please, get your facts straight before making a statement like that.
Spyderco's Chinese and BM Deja Vu are based on different designs of the same maker, late Bob Lum. How can an original design be a rip-off? Rip-off of what?! Do you not see maker's mark on both knives? That should tell you something.

Thanks guys for your opinions and pictures:D... It would more fill the role of an EDC knife than outdoor or anything. I've got beefier stuff but I just think these two knives have very nice lines and look to be exceptional slicers with they're ffg blades. Plus I'm a big fan of Bob Lum and would like to buy one of his designs to pay homage.

The mini-Dejavoo is a good choice if you like American made knives. but if you don't care, if your more about quality, than you could go with the lum. both good knive though!
