This started life as a milled receiver MAK-90 with the required post-ban "features." I wanted to remove the thumbhole stock, so I was going to send it in to Mark at Arizona Response System to just have the 922r parts installed. Before dropping it off, I decided to go for a more extensive makeover instead.

My old MAK-90 came back refinished in Metacol III satin black (http://www.arizonaresponsesystems.com/finish/pagefinish.shtml) with Ironwood Designs wood furniture, and he also did the following:

-thread barrel for slant brake
-fabricate and solder cleaning rod holder
-drill lower handguard, drill and lower handguard retainer (for cleaning rod)
-fabricate and solder bayonet lug
-machine front sight for plunger (for bayonet)
- "opened" front site AKM style

I am very pleased with the results and I hope you AK lovers enjoy the pics!

Looks really good, makes me want to build another one. They are a lot of fun to tinker with and very easy to work on. If you ever want to give one that fresh factory finish try krylon bbq grill paint. Matches the original russian finish perfectly.

It's a beauty !

:o My MAC-90 most likely looks like yours did, before the makeover.

Real NICE Brian!!! I have always been a big AK fan. Just can't kill the things...

Glad you like it guys!:)

kdstrick: I have never shot it from a benchrest, but for my kind of shooting (steel reactive targets from 100-200 yards), it performs really well.

Very nice, tiburon!

I understand these rifles are tough as they come. Yours looks especially good, though!

Beautifully done! with the price of milled receiver AKs going in the upper 1700s, I just traded my Polytech Legend to a LMT CQB piston NIB.. I'm figuring I got about $1,900 out of the Legend.. That is nice work. You've got a keeper.
The Bulgarian SLR 95 is a great milled Ak and actually i'm very happy with my Century Arms Polish 1960s AK, but I got lucky with Century.

You did really well with the Polytech Legend trade Frank! Nice Bulgy too!

Tricky Dickey: I am not sure of the wood, but Ironwood Designs only sells AK stocks in walnut, birch and beech.

I have one of those old MAK-90s with the thumbhole stock too (although mine's stamped, not milled). How much does an upgrade like that cost?

JohnTheTexican: I wil send you a PM with specifics. The 922r conversion itself can be very reasonable, it is the cost of fabricating parts and refinishing that gets pricey.

Sweet! We need to talk AK's. I have 4 Chinese AKs, two Norinco (one is a MAK-90, other an AKM), and 2 polytechs (one is an AKM underfolder). IMO there aren't any AKs made that are higher quality than the old Chinese ones....except for maybe the Russian originals which I have never had the privaledge of shooting.

I bought walnut furniture from ironwooddesigns to convert my MAK-90 but I won't clutter up your thread with my AK pics.

You need a polytech with C serial number next. Or find an old school AKM. ;) :D

Thanks for sharing, always nice to find someone with similar interests, and happy shooting!
