I recently was wondering about my local mall
when I noticed a knife display ( second nature
to me ), ALL of the knives were made by Jaguar.
Onei in particular caught my eye : This particular
model possessed a distinct "rip off" ( NOT copy ) of
either the Benchmade Axis or SOG Arc lock design !
Now, the knife was not in it's proper box, but
the vendor claimed it was indeed a Jaguar ! They
( Jaguar ) didn't even have the temerity to etch
their name on the blade. Just "stainless"; If any
of you forumite(s) are employee(s) or owner(s)
of these two respective companies you might wish
to bring legal action against Jaguar. They actually
copied the Kershaw "Whirlwind" right down to the
"speed safe" mechanism ! If you are interested ( and
have company credentials ) please contact me at
( 203 ) - 497 - 8724, or E-Mail me at AET0962@hotmail.com.
I will obtain the knife for you ( I think it was $5.00 )
and send it to your tech folks to see which locking
mechanism was copied. Hurry though, there's only one (1)
copy left ! God Bless America ! God Damn Jaguar !

A.E.T.

I have noticed that jaguar has copied countless designs from big manufacturers. Just look at knifezilla.com - half of the folder there are Jaguar knockoffs. I only went through part and I already see: Boker, emmerson, spyderco, CRKT, S&W, and on and on.

Hi Allen,

I know there are knockoffs out there replicating name brand knives, but I've not seen a Jaguar with the lock you are referencing. If you get a picture or a website address which shows this knife, please forward it to me at ron@sogknives.com.

I did a few minutes of surfing for Jaguar knives and though I didn't find the knife you've mentioned, I did see a knockoff of our MagnaDot.

Some of the knock-offs in the SMKW catalog are so close that the first clue they're not the real thing comes when you see the low, low, amazingly low price! :D

The best I've seen yet, though, are in the current catalog, where someone has come out with a line of "fantasy" knives that are incredibly poor-looking knock-offs of ... Frost's cheap and ridiculous fantasy knives.

In reference to another company besides Jaguar.....I went over to http://www.bladeauction.com/ the other day and did a search for LCC. This particular day was irritating to say the least. Sixteen results came back, and every one of them had a price tag of under $10. At first I thought maybe a dealer had just started a group of single knife auctions, but after looking at each and everyone of them, they all said very clearly that the knives were Microtech copies or clones.

It's getting to the point where we have to be irritatingly careful about a knife's description to make sure we don't get ripped off by some of these knife companies. Granted I've never used one of the LCC clones for $20.00 but to be honest it would scare me to trust my fingers to a lock of that price.

Knifezilla.com is notorious for selling cheap ripoffs. Not only are they ripoffs of other maker's designs, but the boldly use the names as well. Behold the Jaguar ripoff of the CRKT M16 which knifezilla boldy calls the "Jaguar M16"

The even call this one the Jaguar Whirlwind II

They've got some nerve!

Jaguar even rips off Smith and Wesson Knives who are known themselves for ripping off designs. How ironic.

I'm really not that surprised.Knock-offs happen in allmost every type of product. From movies to software, clothes.designer brand pocket bags, the list goes on and on.For those of you who live in N.Y.C.just take a trip to Chinatown or a sidewalk vendor on any major corner. Some companies have spent a lot of money trying to stop this.I do'nt know the answer but these people are stealing billions of dollars from the American economy.

I am Chinese.

Two blocks away from the Vitorinox showroom where I purchased a Leatherman Wave for USD$100, I could have bought an exact copy for USD$5. Seems like eveything from Surefire to Colibri to Sinn, there's always an inferior quality chinese copy. Guess copying san courtesy is easier. Should love one's own country, but on these particular matters really can't say I'm too proud.

The Jaguars I see around here come under all names and brands, some even marked AUS-8 and ATS-34, with prices approaching lower end Bucks and Gerbers in some outdoor gear shops

The problem here is that it's like making a zerox copy of a zerox copy. After a few cycles, the image starts to get fuzzy.

Of course, we have this problem in the balisong world too. In fact, one of Jaguar's best sellers is a blatent copy of one of Pacific Cutlery's designs.

Anyway, you can read an interesting review of a recent Chinese copy by clicking here

Periodically, there is a very hot under the collar post in the Spyderco Forum about this or that Spydie POS rip-off made in Red China and Sal Glesser seems to almost always post that it is not worth getting excited about. He says that he has tried to stop them, but I gather from the weary tone of his posts that it is like trying to tell the tide not to come in. I am one of those who feels that they injure his reputation by making such an obviously cheap and nasty copy that looks so like his product, but he just wearily shakes his virtual head about it. I really do get the impression that they just cannot be stopped, that they are like the old "Bop the Beaver" game. You hit them here and they pop uop over there, usually under a new name.
