Greetings all,
I have a couple of really cool knives I am told are of Chinese make.
The stiff blades have a right side beveled edge.
They have intricate blade stampings in Chinese or Japanese.
I have pictures posted on Photobucket.
I would very much appreciate a translation.
Best regards, fox1945

Neat. I wish I were able to help, but I do look forward to learning more about these. Do mind me asking how you came across them?

I bought three of these knives, all similar, at a flea market in Jacksonville FL.
I use one at work and is not pictured. They seem to be made of high carbon steel. I guess you call these forged blades. The steel is all one piece through the handle. I would like to learn much more about these. They are very impressive and unusual pieces.

my guess is that they are japanese. japanese uses Chinese characters in their language and what was engraved on your knife makes no sense in Chinese.

essentially what testu said.

It's Japanese. I'm working on it now, but I'm a little rusty in my translation. The 5th link has the symbol for Chrysanthemum, which is the symbol/crest for the emperor of Japan. The 4th link has something to do with the blade being registered or registration. The 3rd link is pronounced gokujo, and means "the best/finest quality."
I'll get back to you re: the full translation of the 4th and 5th links.

Hi JTK,
Thanks for the information. I modified the initial post to indicate Chinese or Japanese. These knives feel very robust and comfortable in your hand.
The dark handled knife has a 5 7/8 blade length, with a laminated wood hande. The other has a solid rosewood handle and a 5 5/8 blade.
Both knives have a 1/8 thick backbones, continuing through the handle.
These well balanced knives make you feel confident tackling a tomato or a tiger! Regards, fox1945
