Chinook 1 or 2 ? A few questions...

I'm trying to decide what Chinook to get, the new one or the older one. I was wondering if you can actually disassemble the new one, if so, that'd be a great thing to do for cleaning it thouroughly.

I like the older one a bit better right now, I think it looks a bit more aggresive and substantial. The new bladeshape is a bit hard to get used to for me.

Anyone have some good hi-res pictures showing the two knifes in comparison ?
Any other suggestions ? Which one do you like better and why ?
Preferably people who have actually handled/owned both knifes and not just one, cause I've read some reviews already.

thanks, cheez

I own both the Chinook II and the Chinook II. In my opinion, the Chinook II is vastly superior to the Chinook I in every respect. The Chinook II is a much better balanced knife and has a more ergonomic grip shape. The action on the Chinook I is kind of rough, while the Chinook II is extremely smooth. The Chinook II seems to move faster in the hand, and is fully reversable for left/right or tip up/tip down carry. The blade shape is personal preference. At first, I liked the shape of the Chinook I...now I like the Chinook II better. Another reason to go with the Chinook II is the S30V steel...much better than CPM-440V. You can disassemble the Chinook II, but not the Chinook I.

Hello

I was going to pick-up Chinook just when the new version was released.
After looking @ both and reading as much as I could (The review @ folders-r-us by Brownie was very helpful), I choose the Original Chinook in 440V.

The traditional looks of the blade shape and the weight were also deciding factors for me. There are advatages to the newer model, it's lighter, smoother and the lock is even stronger, so I might pick one up later, but for now I'm more than happy with the original.

FYI, the original is getting a little hard to find so going with the II might prove easier.

Have both and like both but if I had to choose I think the C2 would get the nod. It's lighter and handles a little better (for me anyway).

One thing I really dislike about the C1 is the overly abrasive ramp. Ate up pockets about as quickly as my waved Commander did.

Just a question - is the lock of the C2 even stronger than the C1? I thought they skeletonised the liners to save weight - but wouldnt that tend to weaken the lock rather than stengthen it?

I have the C1 and it is a very solid lock indeed.

Hello All

I found this on another blade forum, just cut and pasted so no yelling at me :)

"The blade spine has different type serrations with the sharp edges on the sides of the serrations buffed so it doesn't scratch your hand in the tip down position.

The lock geometry was completely re-engineered.

New lock lever and spring, easier to unlock but stronger.

Lock strength increased from 700 inch/lbs to over 1000 inch/lbs.

The handle is narrower and more ergonomic.

The half / choil is more ergonomic.

The liners have been skeltonized to reduce weight without reducing strength.

The back spacer was re-designed and skeletonized.

The weight has been reduced by 2 oz to an overall weight of 6 oz.

The blade pivot and lock pivot are new.

The knife screws together.

Exhaustive spine wack testing from multiple angles.

Exhaustive breaking tests on our Breaker."

There we go, hope it helps

Thanks for the info. I had asked the question on another thread about whether the Strider SmF or SnG was stronger in its lock than the Chinook, butnobody on that thread I believe had used both folders before and so was able to make a dirct comparison. Anyone on this thread has any opinion on this?

I have a Strider SnG and a Chinook II. Comparison: (IMHO)
Chinook II is a bigger knife with about a third more cutting edge.
Chinook II is more comfortable in the hand (ergonomic).
Chinook II hollow ground vs flat grind SnG- SnG is a better slicer due to this grind.
Chinook II- back lock vs full frame Ti lock. Chinook II has a little vertical blade play which I can not get rid of. SnG- rock solid- no blade play in any direction.
Chinook II can be carried tip-up/down- right or left. SnG right hand, tip-up only.
Steel- both are S30V: SnG heat treated by Paul Bos. Chinook II by Spydie. Both hold an edge a long time and both are easy to resharpen. YMMV.
Chinook II is a little heavier to me, both handles are the same thickness.
As far as I am concerned, the SnG is a bomb-proof knife that I would not hesitate to use and abuse (I do all the time) and it asks for more.
The Chinook II is a very well built knife that is better suited for self-defense due to the ergos and blade design. A really, REALLY great value for the money. The Strider costs three times as much but if I ever break it, I get a new one, no questions asked. Both are exceptional knives and I love them both- now you decide:)
