CHINOOK 3 - question

Dear all,

I bought a Chinook 3 a few years ago.
The Chinook 4 already existed, but I had a preference for the # 3 and had managed to buy a new one among the last ones left for sale.
I didn't use it, maybe a bit desappointed, because the knife has a little vertical blade play, very few but absolutely noticeable.

Today I felt like to take it out of the drawer and my question is :
Is it normal that this model, the Chinook 3, has a little bit of vertical blade play?

Thank you very much for your opinion

There was a thread about some back lock folders having vertical blade play on spyderco forums recently, but I don't have a Chinook 3, nor any of my lock-backs have blade play (knock on wood). If that is what it is, I think it is nothing to worry about.

No, not "normal" for any Spyderco.

If it's a "problem," I'd send it back to Spyderco to see if they can fix it.

If you sent it in when you bought it, you might have been able to get a free replacement but not sure this is still possible since the Chinoook 3 is no longer made but they might still give you a Chinook 4 as a replacement after the passage of "a few years" time.

PM Sal here to see what he has to say about it.

Thank you Sgt1372.
It's true that I should have sent it back to the dealer.
The dealer is an honest business in Luxembourg from which I bought some knives. But I knew that the model Chinook #3 was at the end of its life, and became difficult to find. And it was a #3 that I wanted, it was the last one in stock in the shop.
So, it's the reason why I didn't sent it back to the dealer, I kept it but didn't use it, upset because of this small vertical play (it is like new).
The vertical play is moticeable when you force a bit on the knife (for example to cut a pizza whose paste has been a little overcooked). So not an exceptionnal force !

thank you for having answered my question,it's not that bad, just a little disappointment. The knife is beautifull.

Regards
Brice

It shouldn't have noticeable blade play -- mine doesn't. But maybe it's assembled too loose (pivot or lock screws). On the bright side, the Chinook 3 can be disassembled. Might want to try. Note that the Pivot screw can only be unscrewed from one side. I forgot which side though, unfortunately.

Roland.

A disappointment for sure but I don't see any problem with its usage. Have seen much worse problems on here. IF you feel comfortable d'assy is something you could try as noted earlier.

a very small amount can be normal, but if it really bothers you sell it here or on ebay and then look for a new one with no play at all, they pop on ebay all the time and there are currently a few available as we speak for reasonable prices
