Chinook 3 to Yojimbo 2 - DIY Wave?

Hey All,

I carried Chinook 3 with a DIY "wave" addition. Do you think when I get my Yojimbo it would benefit from the same treatment, or should I just go back to practicing standard deployment? Have any of you done a "wave-like" addition to the Yojimbo?

Thanks for your help!

I would take that link down since you are not a paid dealer. I don't want you to get in trouble.
Off topic: I just did this to my Endura and I love it.

A hole in the blade for opening is one of the best ways to open a knife ever. Adding a ziptie in my opinion is uneeded and rather unsightly. I just don't see the point I guess. I will also urge you to remove the link you have posted before you get an infraction. Friendly warning. ;)

The problem with the link is not that he isn't a paid dealer, it is that Ebay is not a paid dealer, or anybody on Ebay.

To the original question, I did it to my Tenacious and it made my knife loose at the pivot from the un-intended action. It stayed on for just long enough to realize it was a bad idea. And yeah, a nice Spyderco with a zip tie looks kind of tacky imo.

Wow, guys. I'm sorry!

I joined bladeforums back in '05 when I was single, in college, and totally a survivalist. Married, kids, job, etc now. I don't post much (to forums at all), but I remembered you guys were around and thought I would ask. I've been a spydie fan since the 90's and wasn't sure if the geometry of the Yojimbo would work because Janich put that thumb indent in it.

I'll go back to hiding. Thanks for the help.

Don't fret it. Ask as many questions as you would like, the Spyderco sub-forum is a good place to hang out. There are rules, and I cannot count how many new guys do exactly what you did. If you have been a Spydie fan for that long, you can fit right in. The whole zip tie thing can be kind of polarizing, I just wanted to warn you it had un-wanted consequences on my knife. We also try and police ourselves so the new guy doesn't get dinged, and the live link is taken down quickly. Again don't fret, post some pictures of your knives, learn something, and probably teach newer fans like me a thing or two about the "golden era" of Spyderco's.

Hey there Halfgone, the Yo 2 is a very purpose built knife.... It's purpose being to get you out of a tight spot if you absolutely have to use it (ask Mr Janich about that). Deployment falls into the parameters of SD. Like anything you should practice practice practice deployment under different circucumstances. Limited space would be one of those circumstances. See if you feel more comfortable with a zip tie wave mod or with the thumb flick.
It's not the end of the world if you put a zip tie thru your spyder hole ... If you don't like it you can always cut it off... There, problem solved :D
The weight of a Yo 2's blade is chunky enough to give it momentum so you may not have to wrist flick to get it open. If not just loosen the pivot a teeny tiny bit...

Is the zip tie mod ugly... hell yes! Does it work well with the Yojimbo 2... Hell yes! (exceptionally well i might ad)
It's your knife, make it your own (that's half the fun of owning a blade)

I put the zip tie on to try it out just a few minutes ago... yep, she deploys as fast as any waved blade i have. I think I'll leave it on... try it out for a spell :p

Who know's, the zip tie mod may not be for you but don't be afraid to try a non permanent mod that may increase your chances of remaining safe....After all, it's about keeping your family safe and or you getting back home in one piece.

I saw an original Yojimbo with a wave notch cut into it. Seemed to me that the notch was way too far away from the pivot to be effective, sort of like how placement of a flipper is important. I don't mind the zip ties and I use them sometimes on other models, but the Yo 2 is designed to grip with your thumb right over the hole, so having a zip tie there kills ergos for me. Instead I just opened up the forward choil enough that it also uncovered the hole a bit and it makes opening much easier while also making the grip more roomy for big/fat fingers.
