After wanting all of the G10 Spyderco models, I have decided on the Chinook. I just have one question-1/2 Spyderedge or plain? I will use it for yard chores, camping, skinning game, and anything else that requires a hard use knife. I have a spyderedge Endura so do I need the 50/50 on the Chinook? Thanks!

I've found that for yard work where green wood needs to get cut, some serration helps minimize the effort required to get through. It also helps to protect the edge on the plain portion of the edge - back and forth in green wood will dull you down pretty quick. If you've ever tried going through electrical cable with a plain edge, you probably spent all of the next day trying to bring the edge back - if it was even possible without a full reconfig.

BUT - If you have any skinning to do, you might find that half and half leaves you without enough unserrated blade to get your work done cleanly without an occasional "bite" from the serrations.

I would (and usually do) go with two knives. Leave the Chinook unserrated, and get something like an Endura or other FRN handled, fully serrated knife to handle the "chainsaw" tasks. Most times, you are better served by either an full serrated edge, or a full plain edge. Half and half often leaves you without enough of either configuration.

Kman,
I very much agree with Brian on this, so I went with the PE Chinook.
I have an FRN SE Native for what little light sawing and tearing I will dare to do with a knife. The Native is a tough little worker.
With Chinook, you're already on the right track! :)
Enjoy.

Funny that this should come up. I just posted my combo edge Chinook in the For Trades because I'm looking for a Plain. It's not that there is anything wrong with a combo, I just happen to prefer plain edge knives.
Good Luck.

Get either (I like plain edged)....if you keep it sharp I don't think it matters much.

My basic philosophy is: If you can't decide whether to get a knife in plain edge or serrated, then get the plain edge. :)

I find that a plain edge is more versatile. I hate combo edges: if I want serrations, I'll go with a fully serrated blade. I find the combo edge to be simply a bad compromise.

Right on!
The plain-edged Chinook just looks better too!
Now go get one but don't go scaring the neighbors!!! :D :D :D ;)
