I am looking into buying the Chinook but just before leaping, I am not too sure of how well suited 440V blade is for the Chinook's intended purpose---which seems to be hard use.
From my months of lurking and reading here, I would think VG-10 or BG-42 or D2 might be a tougher steel and less susceptible to be brittle (??).
From what I've gathered, the 440V reviews seem to be mixed.

Or is the combination just fine like it is??

The Chinook to me is an awesome folder and just what I'm looking for. I just need one last excuse to buy it.

:o

Spyderco has the heat treat right on 440V, so brittleness is not really a factor any more. The Chinook is all that and a couple bags of chips.

Guns&Knives,

I'm glad you posted this query. I have been wondering precisely the same thing. I am interested in buying one too, and thought that this knife used ATS-34. Guess I was thinking of the Wegner.

I have used my chinook on and off for the last 6 months and had no problem at all with the blade. I only have had to lightly hone it once as well. Indeed, it is my favourite folder especially when hiking or canoeing.:)

Thanks guys.

I am now BE-holding my new Chinook. It is everything and more than the owner reviews here said.
Just by looking at the very stout blade, I can trust that the 440V steel will perform well. I ya break the tip on this one, then you should've used a prybar!
A design and construction very well executed. I cannot compliment the makers enough. Grip could not be any better. I will keep this for life.
Blade rotation is very smooth, not too loose, not too tight. NO excess blade play whatsoever.
Thanks to vendor Brian @ DiscountKnives for the excellent service and TWO DAY delivery!
