My favorite folder has developed a slight amount of up/down blade play. It has had a fair amount of use but nothing extreme or abusive. I was just wondering if this is normal. The knife is still perfectly functional. I'm not too worried about it, I'm just curious. Any input/experiences would help.

A SLIGHT amount of up/down is to be expected with lockback knives. I've had many(150+) in my 13 yrs of using(since I was 5) and every one as far as I can remember had a slight amount.

My FRN Delica from 99 gets daily hard use, and has almost no play to it. I can feel a slight amount if I am puching down on a cutting board, but that is a NORMAL thing.

it should have started with the blade play. Is it more than before?

Lockbacks have to have the up down play, its clearence so they can work

Liner locks avoid this by tightening the blade as they slide over. Lock backs dont have the luxuery

Lizardking,
I disagree about lockbacks having to have play. I have a Police that has developed up and down blade play, but I have many other lockbacks, mainly Buck and Spyderco, also a Blackjack Mamba, and none of these have any play, they lock up solid with no movement whatsoever.
I remember Sal saying some time ago that it is not normal and will only get worse.

herm, i remeber sal saying that it was normal and nessecary on a lockback that size.

All the new ones i have handled have had slight blade play (all of 2)

You might be right, but i think that lockbacks, need the clearence
